President's Corner
July is typically the time of year that you all get crazy busy and we scale back, respecting your valuable time. With that said, we will not host a Coffee Connect or Business After Hours this month.

So what do we do in July? Get ready for our largest event of the year! August 6 will be our 15th annual Flounder Tournament and Auction. This family friendly, community event really gained traction during COVID and we see no ceiling in sight. Last year, we paid out over $7,000 in prize money and had 290 anglers register. I call this the "little guys" tournament as, at $50 an angler, anyone with a fishing pole can afford to get in on the action. And don't forget that we hold a silent and tricky tray auction during the weigh in. Over 30 great items, services, and resort stays, to try for. Huge thanks to our early bird event sponsors, Bluewater Advisory, Bank of Ocean City, and Short's Marine for jumping onboard already. Many more sponsorship slots available and we'd greatly appreciate any donations of auction items.

Don't forget to take time to breathe, enjoy the sun's rays, and listen to the sound of the waves. See you soon.

Stay strong and be well.

Shore Community Connections networking group was founded in June of 2017 and has existed as a local networking/referral group for Ocean City, Ocean Pines, and the surrounding areas. We are excited to announce that we will be joining forces with the Ocean Pines Chamber and our new name will be Ocean Pines Chamber Connections. We will still operate independently from the Chamber but all members of OPCC will need to be a member of the OP Chamber and keep their membership in good standing.

We are a category/industry-exclusive group so only one member per industry will be able to be a part of the networking group. Applicants will be reviewed and notified of their admittance within a week of submitting their member profile.

The group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month at 9am at the OP Library. If you are interested in learning more about our group, please join us on the 16th. For more information, please contact Trish Seitz at 7178914277 or trish_seitz@comcast.com.
Why are there logos and ads in the newsletter?

The first week of each month (if I'm on the ball), over 900 businesses, media outlets, community leaders, and residents receive this newsletter.

Who Is Junior Achievement?

Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore is taking the next steps in providing exceptional educational opportunities for our students.

Built on a foundation that teaches financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship, JA reached nearly 15,000 students throughout seven counties over the past year. Partnering with our school systems to bring our programs to the classroom, Junior Achievement ensures students are prepared for career success once they enter the workforce.

In July 2021, the organization announced its biggest project yet – the creation of the Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center, an innovative, life-changing facility where students will learn countless traits and skills, including how to run a business, and balance a budget, and manage the global economy.
Scheduled to open in late 2023, the center will offer two key programs – JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. The former is a fully interactive, simulated, free-market facility where students in 5th grade become business leaders, consumers, and employees for a day. Prepared through 13 in-school lessons of JA curriculum, students work in one of 18 JA BizTown enterprises such as banking, city services, and insurance; learning what it takes to run a successful business, manage personnel and business finances, and work as a team.

JA Finance Park teaches middle and high school students about personal finance and career exploration through 13 lessons of in-classroom instruction culminating in a day-long simulation at the facility. Students apply learned concepts in a real-life setting, receiving a "life scenario" which includes a family, job/income, and other pertinent factors. Students visit businesses to gather information for making personal financial decisions for bank services, housing, transportation, furnishings, food, health care, and other expenses.
Housed at the Oak Ridge Commons in Salisbury, the Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center will welcome 10,000 students per year and countless volunteers. School districts currently set to attend the facility include Worcester, Wicomico, Somerset, Dorchester, Caroline, Talbot, and Accomack. Junior Achievement remains active throughout the year, holding several fundraising events – including golf and cornhole tournaments and bowl-a-thons – while also showcasing events aimed to inspire and empower students on the Shore.

In February, JA held its first Leading Ladies luncheon which paired over 100 high school girls with successful, powerful women from the area for an afternoon of discussion while strengthening their personal brand.
JA’s biggest event of the year remains JA Inspire – a coalition of educators and industry leaders who spend two days giving students a glimpse into potential careers on the Shore. The 2022 event featured more than 3,000 8th grade students.

With many new projects and events on the horizon, Junior Achievement remains a pillar of education on the Eastern Shore. For more information, visit easternshore.ja.org or for updates on the Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center, visit inspiredbyexperiencejaes.org.

Have you looked at your utility bill lately?
Join the Chamber Energy Purchasing Cooperative

Have you looked at your utility bill lately? Are you concerned about how much you are spending? What's going on?

The war, inflation, and hot temperatures are just some of the factors causing rates to hit a 50-year high! As Bloomberg News reported,
“The U.S. Energy Department Secretary Jennifer Granholm was spot on with where oil and gas are going — and it isn't staying at home. Nearly 75 percent of natural gas produced in the United States is being sold to Europe. Many countries in Europe have higher prices for gas than the U.S.” Natural gas is the major producer of electricity.

CQI Associates will continue to watch the market and seek creative ways to provide protection, stability, and savings for our customers. Clients with agreements, ending between now and May 2023, should contact their CQI representative to assure their paperwork is up to date. This will allow us the opportunity to jump on any opportunities that present themselves between now and then.

The Chamber of Commerce Energy Purchasing Cooperative program provides you with an option to help seek pricing that provides savings when compared to the utility rates and offers you long-term budget stability.
