At the August Morning Meeting, Chief Valdovinos reported that funding has now been secured for two dedicated traffic officers. These additional resources will help the department address concerns including excessive vehicle noise and loud music in the downtown district.
Chief Valdovinos also noted the department's interest in two major projects that will help shape Oceanside's future—the Coast Highway Corridor Project and the City's coastal resilience efforts.
The Chief also discussed the department's evolving approach to homelessness. The former Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) has transitioned to the Homeless Evaluation Assistance and Resource Team (HEART) to better address the needs of people experiencing homelessness and connect them with available resources.
Grant funding has also allowed Oceanside to partner with the City of Carlsbad to address homeless encampments. The department is now partnering with the City of Vista to continue this regional approach.
Chief Valdovinos also reflected on growing up in Oceanside's Eastside neighborhood. He shared that crime and violence were significant enough at the time that his mother would not allow him and his siblings to leave their yard. He spoke about how much Oceanside has changed since then and credited organizations like MainStreet Oceanside with helping make a positive difference in the community.
The Chief concluded his presentation by answering questions from attendees, including questions about the department's expanded drone program and other public safety concerns.
