Knights Make It Happen!
Ocoee Community Member

OCPS announced Tuesday evening that as a result of Tropical Storm Nicole, Wednesday, Nov. 9 will be a normal early dismissal day. Schools will also be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 10 and 11. Please visit OCPS.net for the latest updates. Hopefully we will back on schedule Monday, Nov. 14 which is the last regular school week prior to the Thanksgiving Break.

Not affected by the storm across the U.S. is Veterans Day which is this Friday, Nov. 11. This week was set out as Military Week at OHS (the original schedule is shown below) to run in concert with Veterans Day on Friday, but of course will now be halved due to the school closing dates. However, the opportunity still remains to remember our veterans as we have done in this issue.
Thank you to those OHS faculty and staff members who were kind enough to share something about their personal experiences while serving in the U.S. armed forces (please see special segment below). We are very proud of these Knights in that they have effectively served their country twice: once during active military service and then serving in the K-12 schools. Should you happen to see or have contact with any of these teachers or staff members this month, please take a quick moment to thank them for their military service as they truly have "pulled double duty" in their professional careers.

Thank you very much for reading and remember to take all the proper cautions as the storm approaches.

Aircrew survival equipmentmen (“PR’s") are survival equipment specialists and certified parachute riggers. They inspect, maintain, and repair parachutes, search and rescue equipment, survival kits, medical kits, flight clothing, protective wear, night vision equipment, aircrew oxygen systems, liquid oxygen converters, anti-exposure suits, and G-suits. PRs operate and maintain carbon dioxide transfer and recharge equipment, operate and repair sewing machines as well as train aircrew and other personnel in parachute rigging and the use of safety and survival equipment.

My 2 favorite memories are:
- I was on the original crew aboard the USS Hornet (CV-12), when it was towed across San Francisco Bay to its now permanent location as a museum in Alameda, CA. The Hornet had a storied history during WWII in the Pacific, and also during the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. Later in the 1960s, the Hornet supported NASA, which included recovering the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 astronauts when they returned from the Moon. https://uss-hornet.org/

- Serving in support of the Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team when they were based at NAS Alameda during San Francisco Fleet Week
