There is no such thing as a free lunch!"

This was one of my mother's favorite quotes. I heard this quote over and over again while growing up. It was right there anytime I was feeling entitled, anytime I didn't want to put out the extra effort or felt as though something was just too hard. "There is no such thing as a free lunch."  Whether you take this quote figuratively or literally, it still rings true. We, as adults have learned that, in life, nothing is free. Nothing comes without some sort of cost. Nothing worth achieving is attained without effort.

One of the more interesting things about leading middle school students to success is watching them become aware of the realities we take for granted every day. It is in their middle school years that students begin to realize there are injustices in the world. It is in their middle school years that students begin to realize adults can be wrong too. They learn these things through personal experience and by observing the world around them. As parents, it is our natural inclination to provide for our children. We have a strong desire to protect them, and ensure that their path in life is easier than ours has been. However, as my mother must have realized and I now realize as a professional educator; it is critical that one of the life lessons we teach our children is the value of effort. One of the realities that we must not protect them from is the direct correlation between effort and reward.

As you know, one of our main goals at OMS this year is instilling perseverance and grit in our students. So as we all work together to lead these amazing students toward success in life, I ask that you help me in teaching them a lesson that will serve them for many years to come. "There is no such thing as a free lunch."
Thanks mom.

#KNOWYOURCLASSMATES
Thank you to Mrs. Hinkle and Mrs. Amendola for allowing our School Counselors into your AVID classrooms to celebrate KNOW YOUR CLASSMATES DAY!

Know Your Classmates is about building community through positive communication and learning how to embrace differences. Students are reminded the importance of creating an inclusive community where we are not scared by one another's differences, but are willing to communicate positively and learn from one another.

The students came together to share things about themselves with others in their classroom they may have never had a conversation with before. Together, the students practiced inclusiveness and conversational skills such as active listening and making new connections. The students then wrote on hands (below) what they learned about each other and posted it on our Know Your Classmates Banner! It's now hanging up in the cafeteria for all to see!

This banner is now hanging in the OMS cafeteria
