Last week I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Dr. Angela Duckworth. She is best known for her first book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, a #1 New York Times best seller.  In her late twenties, Angela left a demanding job as a management consultant to teach math to seventh graders in the New York City public schools. After several years in the classroom, she made a quest to begin to solve the mystery of why some people work so much harder and longer than others. Angela entered the PhD program in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is now a professor. She is also a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and Founder & CEO of Character Lab. Angela has received numerous awards for her contributions to K-12 education, including a Beyond Z Award from the KIPP Foundation. Angela's TED talk is among the most-viewed of all time.

In fact, Angela's work inspires part of our school motto this year, Grit Gaps and Goals!  Based on our previous efforts toward instilling perseverance and a focus on positive school culture, Ocoee Middle School was selected to participate in a Research Network in Partnership with Dr. Duckworth's Character Lab. If you would like to learn more about this unique opportunity for OMS students, check out this link to our district site explaining the initiative:

https://www.ocps.net/cms/One.aspx?portalId=54703&pageId=855268

Here at OMS, we believe strongly that talent or natural skill are not a guarantee of success. This of course also means that a student can still be successful through hard work and perseverance even it was not easy at the beginning. This Grit, combined with our commitment to seeking out Gaps in the learning and focusing on standards Goals, will lead our students to success! It is nice to know that thanks to our district's initiative in partnering with Angela Duckworth, we might be a part of making that goal a reality.

Michele Hipolito (Media Specialist)

R: Mrs. Hipolito does an excellent job fostering relationships with faculty, staff and students. She is involved in activities such as the Healthy School Team, Read and Feed, and Battle of the Books. She is fun, enthusiastic, and caring in all she does. Mrs. Hipolito is one of the few people at OMS who gets to interact with every student, and students are always stopping in to see her.

E: Students all know they can go to Mrs. Hipolito for help and recommendations. She offers book ideas to engage students in challenging reading. Mrs. Hipolito works with students on a creative project during their lunch. She appears on the announcements to increase student awareness and interest in opportunities.

D: What a year we've had! Mrs. Hipolito works diligently to meet the needs of students and teachers while other classes are being held in the media center. She is determined and solution-oriented to source books for individual students, teachers, and entire classes! I am so grateful for the many ways she continually helps me and all of my students. Mrs. Hipolito is a wonderful Cardinal and a definite asset to our school.

The "Mystery" of Science
Physical Science with Ms. Cantu . . .

Ms. Cantu explains the "The Case of the Missing Necklace" to the class

Ms. Cantu¹s 8th grade Physical Science classes used their CSI skills to solve The Case of the Missing Necklace. The students investigated the "four prime suspects" using their knowledge of physical and chemical properties to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt who the thief was. Each suspect used a specific white powder in their daily job, but only one powder had the characteristic physical and chemical properties that matched the powder that was found at the scene of the crime. "Who do you
think is guilty - Farmer Bob, Chef Joe, Scientist Amy, or Nanny Jan?"
