Oct. 18, 2023

Neighbors,

Our community has a great history of taking care of each other and especially our neighbors in need. Unfortunately, the need is growing, even with the pandemic behind us. According to the 2023 Hunger Report by the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), its nonprofit partners continue to see more individuals coming to their doors seeking food assistance. Last year, the CAFB distributed food for 53 million meals – 77% more than the same period in 2019. Food insecurity is just one indicator of the needs in our community, which also includes clothes, toiletries, transportation and other essentials. I encourage you to read the report and if you can, participate in one of these upcoming opportunities listed below.

Coat Closet Underway

The annual winter Coat Closet is underway! (Photo is from last year's Coat Closet distribution.) My office is working again in partnership with Cornerstones to request donations of new or gently used winter coats. Please note that coats should be washable (no wool or dry clean only) and warm. All sizes are needed. In addition, we are collecting new hats, gloves and scarves. You can drop off donations to Cornerstones, 11150 Sunset Hills Road, Suite 210, Reston, on weekdays through Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I'll have more info in next week's newsletter on when donations will be accepted at the North County Governmental Center.

Ongoing Crisis in Israel and Gaza

I have been heartened to see our Jewish and Muslim communities coming together in prayer following the Hamas terrorist attack and during this awful crisis in Israel and Gaza. For the past 15 years the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation (NVHC) has invited Muslim worshipers from the ADAMS Center to use their facility for Jumma prayers. Earlier last week Imam Magid graciously offered to cancel last Friday’s prayers at the NVHC facility. However, Rabbi Holzman not only encouraged that they continue but attended the service personally and read his response letter (PDF), which received applause from the Muslim worshipers. Before the service, other leaders of NVHC welcomed worshipers as they entered the building for Jumma prayers. I witnessed all this and was greatly moved.

Thank you, Iman Magid and Rabbi Holzman, for your compassion and dedication to universal human values. I also want to thank our Fairfax County Police Department for their presence to ensure everyone felt safe to worship. I hope Rabbi Holzman’s letter can be a salve for all of us during this time, and a reminder to be grateful that we live in an inclusive community dedicated to helping each other in even the most divisive of times.
