Good Afternoon -

Happy Homecoming! This important newsletter contains a variety of reminders about living off-campus and what it means to be a good neighbor.

Please take a few minutes to review it in its entirety.
Off-Campus Orientation

If you did not attend the mandatory Off-Campus Orientation session via Zoom, you will need to watch a recording of the session below.
Personal Safety Tips
Personal safety is all of our responsibility. Please review the following safety resources and ensure you are aware of safety tips and crime prevention:

As we approach Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks, it is important to note that off-campus residences may be especially vulnerable to burglary during periods of time when students are known to be away. When you are planning to leave your residence for any period of time, keep the following in mind.

  • Take all valuables with you.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor or friend staying in town to keep an eye on your residence and provide a contact number.
  • Make sure your residence has the appearance of being lived in and not empty.
  • Leave curtains and blinds in a normal position.
  • Use timers for lights and radios.
  • Pause all mail and other deliveries.

Event Planning Red Flags
You should explore an event venue, rather than your apartment or single-family home if your event requires any of the following items:

Tents, Tarps, Inflatables (i.e. bounce houses), Slip and Slides, Performance Stages, PortaPotty
Trash, Recycling, and Yard Waste
The 2021 pick up schedule can be found here (we are on the BLUE schedule)

Important Trash, Recycling, Waste Reminders
  • Carts should be at the curb by 6 a.m. the day of collection and no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before.
  • Carts should be removed from the curb by 8 a.m. the day following collection.
  • Only the carts issued by the city can be used.
  • Please place the cart at the curb, not in the street. The silver lift handle for the truck hoist should be facing the street; the hinge for the lid should be away from the street.
  • Do not place the cart behind parked cars or within three feet of trees and bushes or other carts.
  • Only items in the carts will be picked up; retain excess garbage for the next week’s collection.
  • Please note that excess garbage IS NOT to be placed outside. It will attract wild animals and they may scatter the garbage; this creates an environmental health hazard and is unattractive in your neighborhood.
  • If you need new or additional carts, please contact your landlord.

Bulky Items

Bulky Item Pick-Up is a service that is offered one time per year in the late spring. The city schedules our pick-up date as close to graduation as possible. For more information visit cityofws.org/587/Bulky-Items. If you need to dispose of bulky items at any other time of the year, you can make trips to the landfill yourself. There is a fee to use the landfill, however, you can obtain two free landfill passes per year per household. For more information and the application for the pass, please visit cityofws.org/1256/Solid-Waste-Disposal.

Cardboard Boxes

Cardboard boxes can be recycled. They can be put in the blue recycle bins, please break them down to fit more of them into your bin and save space on the trucks. If your boxes are too large to fit into your recycle bin, they can be disposed of at 2417 Reynolda Rd. You must break down all boxes put into the dumpsters at the collection center. Also, you cannot recycle any Styrofoam inserts, they must be put in your trash bins (brown) or taken to the landfill.

As always, if you have questions or concerns please contact us at housing@wfu.edu or 336-758-5185.
