In the right hands, contemporary art can serve to contextualize current events and provide pointed commentary on the world around us. “Toe Tag” – which through the lens of the Iraq War remarks on the toll war takes on communities – demonstrates that Juliellen Byrne’s hands are quite capable in this regard. By combining doll-like heads and praying hands with slips of paper that list the names of people killed during the eight-year war, Byrne explores one of humanity’s oldest dualities – innocence versus violence – while seeking to sculpt viewers’ perspectives along the way.

Kaleigh Pisani-Paige, curator of collections and registrar at the Canton Museum of Art, discusses the piece – part of the museum’s permanent collection – and what can be learned from it.

“Toe Tag” is in the museum’s permanent collection and is on display during the museum’s “ Spirit of Clay” exhibition through Oct. 20.

Openings, events and performances to look for the week of Oct. 3–9.
Oct. 3
Emily Davis Gallery
Attend an artist reception for " Stranger Beings: Hieronymus Objects & Other Curiosities" from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall, home to the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron. The familiar becomes twisted, morphed and surreal in Emily Davis Gallery’s new exhibition, which has works from the regional Hieronymus collection, including pieces from Kiki Smith, Keith Haring, David Salle and Tip Toland, in conjunction with six Ohio artists. Collectively, the works create an exhibition of evocative imagery through a variety of mediums. The result is a fusion of hyperrealism with a sensual masquerade of the bizarre.

Cleveland Public Theatre
Attend the world premiere of " Rastus and Hattie" by Lisa Langford, the 2018/2019 Nord Family Foundation Playwright Fellow & 2019 Joyce Award Winner. Needra and Marlene enjoy a perfect post-racial friendship until “black” robots walk into their lives. These automatons, based on Westinghouse’s 1930 brown-skinned robots, place them at opposite ends of society in an alternate past. This hilarious comedy delves into our traumatic legacy and explores new ideas about how to move forward.
Editor's note: Lisa Langford was featured as a Scene Stealer in the Fall 2019 issue of Canvas.
Oct. 6
Transformer Station
Attend a performance by Sarah Davachi from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The composer and performer of electroacoustic music is primarily concerned with disclosing the delicate psychoacoustics of intimate aural spaces, utilizing extended durations and simple harmonic structures that emphasize subtle variations in overtone complexity, temperament and intonation, and natural resonances. Her sound manifests an experience that lessens apprehension of consonance and dissonance in likeness of the familiar and the distant.
