Message from President Sara Beacham
Greetings!

Happy October and Happy Birthday Soroptimist International!

This Sunday, October 3, 2021, we celebrated the 100-year birthday of Soroptimist International. It was a fun-filled weekend with Soroptimist International live broadcasts and breakout zoom rooms. I even had the pleasure of being in a breakout room on Sunday with Joan Jackson, former SI Chico member and past President of our club. She currently resides in Vancouver, Canada.

There were so many exciting things, including projects that each federation is working on. Did you attend? If so, what was your biggest takeaway from the weekend? I cannot narrow it down to one theme or project that I would call my favorite, but I will say that I identified a recurring theme that can be summed up in a quote. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to succeed, go together.” I can’t remember who said that quote, but it rings true for Soroptimists and my theme for the year. We all must work together for the greater good.

There were many UN representatives that spoke over the weekend. They, too, echoed those sentiments. It’s not one person speaking loudly at the UN. You get invited to a table to discuss issues and work together.

As part of our local 100-year celebration, our banner is hung up in downtown Chico for both our club and SI Bidwell Rancho. And…drumroll, please… our billboards are up!!! Have you seen any yet? I have located three already as part of my everyday getting around town. I was having a bad day and then, boom! There it was; day turned around, big smile on my face.

Our club also got the opportunity to be a part of the Girl Scouts of Northern California groundbreaking for the Pavilion project on their new property. What an outstanding event! We got to meet the CEO of Girl Scouts, the Women In Construction club from Chico State, some Girl Scouts (and a Daisy), and many others who are supporting the project. Thank you to our club members who were able to attend. It was such a fantastic moment to be a part of.

See you Wednesday for our October business meeting. I am looking forward to this meeting as we welcome six new members!

Stained-glass window Inveiling
On Sept. 29th there was an unveiling of a stained-glass window that had been installed in the library of Pine Ridge Elementary school in Magalia. The window was made by the Rainforest Art Project run by Dan Evers in Chico. Two students did elements of the design; Maryann and Michaela. The camellia is from the tree outside the library and the black panther is the school mascot.

This project was supported by Soroptimists International of Chico through their Camp Fire funds.

Present at the unveiling were the kindergarten students as well as other students and teachers. Pictured is the principal, Chris Dunlap and 2 past presidents of Soroptimists International of Chico, Bonnie Chapman, and Billie Araiza with her granddaughter, also, Dan Evers and Shari Hopper who works at the Rainforest Art Project as well as being a Soroptimist.

October SI Chico Fur Baby (and Member) of the Month!

We are pleased to introduce the club to Foxy Lady and Lucy, Joyce’s fur babies. Foxy Lady, aka, Miss Fox is a Pomeranian and is approximately a year and a half. Foxy Lady was lost on the streets of Chico and came to live with Joyce as a foster on Thanksgiving Day last year. Foxy Lady wasn’t wearing a collar and hadn’t been chipped. After no luck in finding Foxy’s humans, Joyce knew she couldn’t live without her, so on Christmas Day, Joyce decided to be her fur-ever mom. Joyce named her Foxy Lady because she looks like a little Fox. Foxy’s new sister is Lucy. Lucy is a 4-year-old Pom/Chi that needed to be re-homed. We did a meet and greet July 21, and it was love at first sight for both fur babies. They are now inseparable.  It was hard for Lucy’s past parent to re-home her, but after seeing her with Foxy, he knew he had found the right home for her. Foxy Lady and Lucy have brought so much love and happiness back into Joyce’s life after losing Rudy last year who was her fur baby for 12 years.

Besides being a dog lover, SI Chico Communications Committee Co-chair Joyce keeps busy with her business, Joyce Brown Marketing Online Consultant. She maintains SI Chico’s website, is Editor of our weekly Eblast, Editor of our quarterly newsletter the Snail, Roster Coordinator, creates all our Evites, Sign ups, Surveys and other activities as needed. She is active in the Chico Elks Lodge #423 and is a Past Exalted Ruler (PER) of Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge #2797 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Joyce has one daughter, 3 granddaughters, 2 great-granddaughters, and 1 great-grandson that all live in Merced.

Dear SISTAs,
Please find attached the latest issue of our Club Newsletter - thanks Jean!!! - another bumper edition. Please take some time to sit down and read it - info gets sent out to Members piecemeal so it's lovely to see it all in one publication - and realise how busy we've been as a Club!

In friendship,
