Knight Commission Letter to Congress on SCORE Act

Knight Commission Co-Chairs Pam Bernard and Len Elmore sent a letter to members of Congress about the financial incentives embedded in billions in annual college sports revenue distributions. The letter outlines an important change the Commission has proposed to the incentives in those distributions. If implemented, the Commission’s proposed zero cost solution would help achieve one of the stated objectives of the SCORE Act — “defending Olympic sports” — and boost the values of college athletics that many lawmakers support. Access the PDF of the September 12, 2025, letter HERE.

Public Opinion Poll Results Show Overwhelming Support
for Academic Mission in College Sports

A recent national survey shows that Americans are divided and often uncertain about the future of college sports with significant splits on issues like compensation for college athletes, athletes’ potential status as employees, and who should govern the multi-billion-dollar enterprise of Division I athletics. Despite these differences, Americans overwhelmingly support maintaining academic standards for college athletes, and they agree that colleges should provide equitable opportunities to female athletes and opportunities for athletes in sports other than those tied to generating revenue (like football and basketball).
