Prairie Restoration Project wins award

Fendi showcasing her awards in Grand Junction and Fendi on a project day talking about how to harvest seeds from a morning primrose.

Congratulations to Aurora Naturalist, Fendi Despres! She just received a Blue Grama Award for Outstanding Achievement in Ecological Restoration or Recreation Management at the 2024 Colorado Open Space Alliance conference in Grand Junction and a Community Spirit Award for the work she has done on the Prairie Restoration Project, a program she created and currently manages.

The Prairie Restoration Project at the Plains Conservation Center, 21901 E. Hampden Ave., is an ongoing initiative designed to restore relationships between people and nature. Volunteers are needed year-round. Embrace the great outdoors and get your hands dirty by doing tasks like removing non-native invasive plant species, planting native prairie plants, monitoring wildlife and collecting data as part of a research experiment.

No experience is required! All volunteers must be ages 12 and older. Shifts take place in the mornings every Thursday and select weekends. There are no restrictions when it comes to how little or often you can volunteer.
