National Cathedral, Hillwood Museum & Gardens

Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024

Departures:

  • 6 a.m., Weis Markets, 4300 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg
  • 6:45 a.m., Queensgate shopping center (rear of theatre), York
  • 7:15 a.m., Maryland Park & Ride, Parkton

We arrive at approximately 10 a.m. for our visit to the National Cathedral where we'll explore the must-see details of the cathedral’s dramatic art and architecture with a 30-minute guided tour of the nave (main level), and you may view the crypt (lower level) after the tour.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. we arrive at Hillwood for a guided mansion tour. Marjorie Merri-weather Post bought Hillwood in 1955 and decided her home would be a museum that would inspire and educate the public. Her northwest Washington, D.C. estate features the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia; a distinguished 18th-Century French decorative art collection; and 25 acres

of serene landscaped gardens and natural woodlands for all to enjoy. We’ll have an elegant three-course luncheon here as well.

Lastly, we'll visit the U.S. Botanic Garden that are steeped in history, rich with tradition. The garden is a living plant museum that informs visitors about the importance and, often irreplaceable, value of plants to the wellbeing of humans and earth's fragile ecosystems.

We depart for home at 5 p.m. with a rest and meal stop on your own.
