Insights from Online Learning Conference

I just got back from the eLearning Guild's Online Learning Conference in Denver and here are a few quick take-aways:
  • Video engages the brain in multiple ways and is often the very best medium for delivering content. Since it is getting much easier and much more affordable there is no excuse for starting your video production program today.

  • Working out Loud is a proven method to help rewire your brain and cement learning. Side benefits include greater creativity and increased collaboration.

  • You don't need fancy software to build effective elearning. You can get great results with PowerPoint and some creativity.

  • The K-12 educators still know a lot more about flipping the classroom than corporate training professionals. We have a lot to learn from them!

  • You can have a great conference with no keynote speakers - eLearning Guild showed us how at Online Learning.

  • Neuroscience is hot in the learning industry but people are still confused about what really qualifies as an application of neuroscience. (Those of you who are just slapping "neuroscience" in front of your legacy programs and re-marketing - you know who you are!)
Newest Podcast!

Trudi Baldwin's varied and successful career as a manager in three Fortune 200 companies has afforded her endless "opportunities," as they're called in corporate-speak, to participate in the ridiculous. Trudi is well-known as the author of the detective series featuring Sami Dick and her hilarious escapades as a private eye. Her latest book, which led me to invite her to speak at Brain Matters 2015, is called Unlock your Genius as you Age: How to Peak at 70 & Beyond. Trudi and I sat down on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to talk about life after 50, how to find your unique genius and how to keep your brain and body healthy and productive well into your 100s. You can hear more from Trudi at Brain Matters 2015 November 10-11. Listen to Trudi's podcast...

A Free eBook from Learningtogo and The TrainingDoctor!

If you've been following the news about the expanding skills gap in leadership today, you know that we are facing a crisis as baby boomers leave the workforce and newer leaders try to fill their roles. Working with my colleague and friend Dr. Nanette Mfreeiner, we've written an ebook to teach you a brain-based model for developing future leaders using neuroscience. The LEADS model shows you how to accelerate the leadership development process and close the widening gap in your organization by honing the skills that are most needed for future leaders in the 21st century. This ebook is available as a free download to all subscribers.
Association for Talent Development (ATD) chapters have a variety of speaker needs, for chapter programs, conferences, learning events, and other events of interest to their members. ATD provides an online speaker resource available to volunteer chapter leaders responsible for coordinating programming for their local chapters. I'm thrilled to be included as one of the speakers approved to serve these chapters with my programs on the brain science of learning. If you need a speaker for an onsite or virtual event, you get more information on my programs here.

Your brain processes information in pictures, so why not deliver learning content in graphic form? Infographics are all the rage in social media because they convey a lot of information quickly and help the audience recognize patterns, connections and themes much more quickly than would be possible with text and/or audio. I'll be presenting my findings from over a year of research on the nature of genius: What does it mean in the 21st century and how can we nurture it in ourselves and others?
