Hello Gerald, FOR YOUR INFORMATION

RPOC NEWS – October 2023

By: John Fraley, President, RPOC

Greetings

You do not have to be an RPOC member to attend the reunion or luncheons if you are an ACTIVE law

I thought that the “dog days “of July and August were behind us. As always, when we creep into fall, the warm weather of summer seems to hang on. I hope that all our retirees enjoyed the summer with family and friends.

The RPOC Board of Directors and I are in the process of preparing for our 33rd reunion next year. The event will take place in Lake Mary Florida, on Thursday May 2nd through Sunday May 5th, 2024. The lunch cruise will be on May 4th and is available for our attendees. Once you receive your annual dues renewal in January don’t forget to make your reservation for the cruise because it’s usually a sellout.

The golf tournament will be on Friday, May 3rd. I’m planning to have the tournament at the Lake Mary Golf Club. I am open to suggestions to play at other courses in or near Lake Mary. Prices are up on everything we do with our reunion, food, golf, and the hotel. The staff at the Lake Mary Marriott have been very gracious to our group. If anyone can come up with another option for golf, please call me. We need to keep the green fees in the thirty-dollar range. I will need to have an early financial commitment from the players. Last year I reserved six foursomes, and only had 16 players and we had to pay for twenty players. Most golfers know that if you want to play you have to pay upfront. I will come up with a plan where players can Venmo the money to me. I will guarantee that money with be returned up to forty-eight -hours before the tournament if you must cancel. Your cost this year is sixty dollars which includes prize money.

On a serious note, please keep the Miami Dade Police Department in your thoughts and prayers. As you all know, the director suffered a serious gun related injury last month. I never met Director Ramirez while I was working as I retired in 1996, I did meet him at the police memorial last year. I wish him a safe and speedy recovery.

The RPOC will be opening the Otis Chambers Scholarship Fund in January of 2024. As President and Chairman of the fund, I am pleased to announce that we have awarded twenty-five scholarships since the fund was established in and with the help of the membership and their generous donations, we hope to expand the program. Many thanks to Kay Chambers who came to us in the beginning with a large donation in the name of her husband, Otis Chambers. Otis was a great detective in Central and a basketball player. We played together on the over-forty basketball team in the statewide Law Enforcement Games. Please donate what you can to help us continue this worthwhile program.

In May of 1994, I wrote an article for the Heat about my struggle with Cancer. I came across the article last week and it reminded me of how well the department helped me deal with what I had to go through between the summer of 1991 and when I retired in January of 1996. I can’t express how much my friends and colleagues meant to me at that time in my life, now that I’m Cancer free thirty-plus years. To that end, we can do the same for Freddie Ramirez.

Special thanks to Jerry Rudoff who has been there for the RPOC while dealing with back issues. Barry Savage is recovering from back surgery. Barry is now home while continuing therapy, I spoke with him last week and he told me he is doing well. These guys are like the spokes in the wheel that keep the RPOC rolling. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Lastly, we invite our members with private businesses to have their business cards posted on our website FREE of charge as long as you maintain current membership. Send a copy of your business card to presr43@ipa-usa.org for publication.

We have personally contacted Dave Edmonds and he assures us that there are no hidden agenda's other than finding LEO's wishing to write articles and/or just improve their writing style. If you have any questions, please direct them to Mr. Edmonds.

Name: Dave Edmonds

Email: apb.dave@360armor.org

Phone: 707-490-9010

Subject: American Police Beat magazine, interested in our officers writing for us

Message: Hello, I’m a retired LEO and manager/editor for American Police Beat magazine. We’re looking for new LEO writers and I’m hoping you can put the below or something similar in your next newsletter to your members. My phone number is 707-490-9010 if you’d like to discuss.

Thanks,

Dave Edmonds

“‘Have you ever thought about publishing a law enforcement article? Here’s your chance. My name is Dave Edmonds and I’m a retired 34-year Deputy Sheriff from Sonoma County, California. I work for American Police Beat magazine, and we're looking for a cadre of new LEO writers.

I know that many LEOs have interesting and useful insights to share but don't know how to get started. When I first started writing for law enforcement magazines back in 2010, I know I wasted a lot of time and was pretty lost. So if you’ve ever thought about trying to publish an article this is a great opportunity. Also, if you’re a subject-matter expert who might want some help writing the article(s), one of our professional writers can be assigned to you. Please contact me at apb.dave@360armor.org.
