Fall Greetings from Commissioner Bobby Powell Jr.
Hello District 7 Family,
I extend warm greetings to you and your families. This month offers an opportunity to recognize important causes, reflect on our shared history and enjoy meaningful moments with family, friends and neighbors throughout Palm Beach County.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, remember those we have lost and stand in solidarity with individuals and families impacted by the disease. National Cancer Institute data show that the county averaged 1,435 new cases annually from 2018 through 2022, with approximately 406 women diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer each year during that period. These figures underscore the importance of early detection, regular screenings and access to quality health care. I encourage residents to prioritize their health, speak with their health care providers about recommended screenings and support efforts that promote breast cancer awareness, education and prevention.
As we continue through hurricane season, which ends November 30, I encourage residents to remain prepared and informed. Review your family’s emergency plan, replenish essential supplies, monitor official weather updates and stay informed about local emergency resources.
Let us continue to look out for one another, support our neighbors and work together to build a healthier, safer and stronger Palm Beach County. May October bring you and your loved ones good health, happiness and meaningful opportunities to make a positive difference in our community.
A Life of Service is a life that counts,
Bobby Powell Jr.

On Thursday, October 8, community leaders, educators, behavioral health professionals, advocates and supporters came together for an important conversation about digital addiction and its impact on children, youth and families. Through collaboration and a shared commitment, participants explored ways to develop solutions that strengthen the community and promote healthy development for future generations.
For 35 years, Boys Town South Florida has remained dedicated to helping children and families thrive. Through partnerships and community engagement, it continues to advance its mission of building brighter futures for the children and families it serves. The organization extends its appreciation to all partners and supporters for their continued engagement, collaboration and commitment to this important work.
This summit provided a platform for behavioral and mental health experts to share concerns and research data related to technology usage among youth, as well as ways to equip families with effective approaches to help them make better choices when it comes to screen time. With the expansion of the digital space, and lack of regulation, there is a growing concern related to social media apps and digital games becoming more addictive. This leads to youth and adults, chronic assumption of Screen Time, often, including short form and inappropriate content that can result in lower social and emotional skills, lower, cognitive ability, lack of concentration, less human connection, and potential long-term consequences to how youth relate to others.
Panelists at the Community Action Summit included Jim Grimes, CBS 12 News anchor and master of ceremonies; Dr. Steve Arcidiacono, behavioral health clinic Director for Boys Town South Florida; Gregory Schiller, J.D., CEO of the Child Rescue Coalition; Dr. Diane Kelly Andreou, clinical psychologist with Palm Beach County Youth Services; and Michelle Goncalves-Fleming, principal of Palm Beach Gardens Community High School.

First observed on Oct. 10, 1992, by the World Federation for Mental Health, World Mental Health Day recognizes mental health as an essential component of overall health and well-being. Mental health affects how individuals think, feel, manage stress, relate to others and make decisions.
Stigma, silence and limited access to care can prevent individuals and families from seeking support. Early identification, open conversations and access to quality, affordable care can save lives, strengthen families and build healthier, more resilient communities.
Schools, employers, health care providers, faith-based and community organizations, and government agencies all play an important role in promoting mental wellness, expanding access to services and creating safe, supportive environments where individuals can seek help without judgment or fear.
