Participate in the VOS Ski Race, and Help Rich Evans Earn Another Doctorate!

I'm thinking about going back to school for a doctorate in anthropology. My thesis will be titled, "Customs and Culture of the VOS Tribe." I've got most of the research done: I've been embedded in the tribe for nearly 20 years now, learning their language (a mixture of Latin, engineering terms, and profanity) and their customs (e.g., excessive hand scrubbing). They even let me marry one of their women. But one of the tribe's practices baffles me: it's the annual VOS ski race.

During the ski race the tribe's members demonstrate atypical behavior. They cast aside their notoriously competitive natures and laugh happily even when they are defeated by small children or Italians. They toss their hard-earned professionalism to the wind and have been known to race in cow costumes, cross-dress, or use snowboards. Normally loathe to show weakness in front of other tribe members, some of these skiers snowplow, stumble and tumble down the course with merriment. The tribe's kids race too, and they take it more seriously than the elders.

Rich EvansI've queried the tribe's leaders about these bizarre behaviors. They claim the event is a "fun race" and a "fundraiser" for the tribe's educational foundation. Tribe treasurer Raviv Balfour's estimate of the funds raised jibed with tribe race organizer Jon Suber's estimate: just over $5,000. It's that large because a lot of tribe members race, and in past years Janet Van Dyke has convinced the venerable and generous Biomedtrix company to sponsor the event.

I don't feel that I've gotten to the bottom of this ski ritual. I think that with more VOS tribe members skiing in the race I can come up enough data to write a very nice graduate project.

Thanks for your help - see you at the race!

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 10
44th Annual Veterinary Orthopedic Society Conference
March 11-18, 2017 at Snowbird, Utah
by Reunan Guillou and José Garcia-Lopez
VOS Scientific Program Chair and Assistant Scientific Program Chair

We have extended the deadline for abstract submission for the VOS 2017 Conference to November 10, 2016.

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.

The call for papers will close on November 10, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. Hawaiian time for both podium presentations and posters. Visit the Abstract Submission page on our website for complete instructions about submitting an abstract.

Submission categories are:
  • Clinical/Scientific Studies

  • Case reports: a maximum of three novel or interesting cases
The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Award was established to recognize outstanding resident abstract submissions to the scientific program. At least one recipient per year will be awarded up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. The abstract submission may only be of studies conducted during the residency program. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on online submission form.

DON'T MISS THE FUN AT THE ANNUAL VOS SKI RACE!
by Dick Lau
Assistant Director, VOS Education Foundation

The ski race has been a part of VOS since the society's beginning. It was originally just a fun race with makeshift obstacles like hay bales and crossed slalom poles. The winners won the "Acetabular Cup." Later, as resorts worried more about accident liabilities, it became a NASTAR race. The original purpose was to encourage family fun together and for members and families to meet informally at the start, finish and picnic. All ages racing together, Moms and Dads racing sons and daughters, grandparents racing grandchildren, and parents proud of their very fast teenage racers add to the fun. More recently the income from the race has helped fund awards from the VOS Education Foundation. An important, fun, component was added during the world congress as international teams competed as well as individuals. Where else can you race against a tall guy in pig costume, or a banana?

I personally look forward to the race each year, hoping to race at least until I'm 90, and no, that is not next year.

The Canine Rehabilitation Institute is excited to offer VOS members a discounted rate for its Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research course beginning in January. This online course lasts 10 weeks and prepares you to begin research immediately. The goal of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to clinical research in the veterinary setting. The entire process from concept to publication will be covered. Each participant will begin by developing a research hypothesis that matches their interests and clinical case loads, and then will design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This online course will take place over 10 weeks and be limited to 15 students. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

UPDATES FROM THE FALL BOARD MEETING
VOS fall board meeting

Dear VOS members:

With summer behind us and the holiday season in front of us, I would like to take up this corner of the newsletter to share with you all some updates from the Fall Board Meeting held every year at ACVS.
  • We have noticed a trend amongst the members to only book certain aspects of the VOS conference through ski.com. This actually diminishes the discounts we can get for you as all the different aspects are interconnected. For example, the discounted lift tickets rely on our members booking their discounted lodging through Penny. So please book ALL of your accommodations and reservations through Penny at ski.com. Plus you get that personal touch and expertise one can only get by dealing with a real person!

  • We will once again open the discussion to our members about the VOS membership endowing the 7th and final Mark Bloomberg Award. Please keep an eye out for more information regarding this important issue and/or plan on attending the annual VOS membership meeting at the 2017 conference.

  • We will continue to have an equine specific track at the 2017 conference as this was a huge success last year.

  • Attendance in the ski race is waning so in order to up the ante, we are going to encourage a little friendly competition: RESIDENTS VS FACULTY. Race your favorite mentor and win some serious kudos and perhaps a little swag for your name tag ...

  • We'd also like to recognize VOS member Dr. Neil Embleton, who spoke at the ACVS Surgery Summit but was accidentally omitted from our list of speakers in the last newsletter.
VOS members, you should be proud of your board as they continue to work (in all that ample free time we have) to continue to make sure we do right by the membership and the mission of VOS. As always, we are open to suggestions, concerns and questions ( [email protected]).

Congratulations to all VOS members who shared their knowledge and expertise at this year's conference!
