Greetings, VOS members!
We have officially launched into conference mode, starting with the Fall Board Meeting at this year's ACVS symposium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Planning for festivities at Snowmass Village are underway. Online registration is now open at the
VOS Store. This newsletter and the
VOS website are the two best places to get up-to-date information on travel arrangements and the conference program.
The abstract submission deadline has been extended to November 1st. Please remember to indicate if you are interested in a podium or a poster or both. If you are currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program and are interested in being considered for the Mark S. Bloomberg Resident Research Award, please indicate so on the
online submission form.
There are several VOS board positions that will be up for grabs this spring. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for one of these positions, please
email Rich Evans. It would be ideal but not mandatory if the nominees were present at the conference. The open board positions are:
- President Elect: 1 year (3-year commitment in total)
- Communications: 3 years
- Assistant Scientific Program Chair: 4 years
- Awards: 3 years
- Research: 3 years
 Serving on the VOS Board has been tremendously rewarding and fun (although I have not personally served on many boards, I suspect we have more fun than most). My colleagues on the board are some of the most dedicated and selfless individuals I have had the pleasure to work with. I know that there are many more individuals out there that would be a great asset to the board so go get yourselves nominated!

VOS NEWSLETTER ADVERTISING PROGRAM
VOS continues to offer advertising space in the electronically delivered newsletters.
Advertisers may choose to place an ad for one billing cycle, which covers three newsletter issues, or select a discounted annual package, which covers nine newsletter issues.
VOS offers vertical banner ad space in addition to horizontal banner ad space. Horizontal and vertical banner ads are available in two sizes (single-height or double-height), and each ad may be linked to the advertiser's website homepage or other web page.
A maximum of 15 horizontal and 2 vertical advertising spaces are available in each issue, and priority is given to annual advertisers.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 1

45th Annual Veterinary Orthopedic Society Conference

The abstract submission deadline for the VOS 2018 Conference has been extended. Abstract submission will close Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. HAST (Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone) for both podium presentations and posters.
We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.
Submission categories will be:
- Clinical/Scientific Studies
- Case reports: a maximum of three novel or interesting cases
The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Award was established to recognize outstanding resident abstract submissions to the scientific program. At least one recipient per year will be awarded up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. The abstract submission may only be of studies conducted during the residency program. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on online submission form.
The Student/Intern Research Award was established to recognize outstanding student or intern abstract submissions to the scientific program. One recipient per year will be awarded (depending on abstract quality) up to $1500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a DVM or Intern training program or within 1 year of completion of a formal internship or DVM program are eligible. The work must be performed as a student or intern. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on online submission form.

REGISTER NOW FOR THE INAUGURAL PAIN IN ANIMALS WORKSHOP
|
VOS is a scientific partner of the Pain in Animals Workshop: Creating a Research Roadmap for Measuring Chronic Pain in Dogs and Cats. The inaugural meeting will be held November 29-30, 2017, at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland. The proposed meeting will involve National Institutes of Health pain researchers, industry, Food and Drug Administration and academic researchers. We propose to bring the strengths of all these partners together to discuss the current state of pain measurement in animals, and to formulate a roadmap of research and development priorities for the future. There is no registration fee, but you must pre-register to attend. For more information, please see the

CRI offers certification programs in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation to veterinary and physical therapy professionals. Our certification program as well as our continuing education courses, such as aquatic therapy, pain management, and geriatric rehabilitation are all RACE approved. Courses are held in the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Australia.
What should Veterinary Orthopedic Society members know about your company?
Rehabilitation services are in increasing demand by dog owners / handlers worldwide. Practices that do not offer rehabilitation are likely to lose surgical revenue to those practices that do offer these services.
Can you explain a challenging situation that your company was able to solve?
Creating the premier textbook covering the topics of canine sports medicine and rehabilitation, now in its 2nd edition, provided veterinary professionals with much needed information. This text is now required reading for many programs and is on the reading list for the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2nd ed.; Zink and Van Dyke eds., Wiley Publishing.
Can you tell us about any new products or services your company is developing?
We are increasing our online course library. This allows our students to better prepare for their time in our classroom as well as providing continuing education options for our graduates.

 VOS members are eligible for a discounted subscription to the
Veterinary and Comparative Orthopaedics and Traumatology (VCOT) journal. VCOT is the official journal for 11 organizations, one of which is VOS.
The VCOT journal offers two types of subscriptions to VOS members:
Premium member subscription - $149: Printed copies & online access to current issues and archive back to 1988.
Standard member subscription - $133: Printed copies & online access to the current issues and 9 years archive.
VOS annual dues of $110 ($25 for Interns and Residents) must be paid to receive these rates. Please note that individual subscriptions are limited to online access by one person only. PIN will be issued by publisher.
This year, we are offering a way to subscribe online to the VCOT journal with an online subscription form on our website and online payments through the VOS store. You may also download and complete a paper form and send in a check or credit card payment if you prefer. Please see the Subscribe to the VCOT Journal page on our website for complete details.
