October & November Newsletter

"Divine Abundance follows the law of service and generosity.
Give and then receive. Give to the world the best you have
and the best will come back to you."

Council News

As we move into the Fall season, we are grateful for the continued efforts of our many volunteers and the chairpersons that lead the various committees. Portland Center exists entirely through the voluntary service and financial contributions of our members and friends. Those contributions take many forms, all of which are appreciated.

In August, with perfect weather, more than 35 members and families of Portland Center gathered together for our newly revived, annual outdoor picnic at a devotee’s home. Conversation flowed, games were played, and delicious food was shared, along with strolls in the adjacent wooded park. Fellowship at its finest! We’re already looking forward to next year’s event.

We are also looking forward to a pair of long meditations. Our annual Thanksgiving meditation will be Saturday, November 15, from 10am-2pm.

The All-Day Christmas Meditation is Saturday, December 13, from 10am-6pm, and will be led by SRF monastics, Brother Sarvananda and Brahmachari Rahul. More details to come.

We hear from visiting monastics that the meditations at Portland Center are "deep and still." We are grateful for all who take part in the operations and meditations of our center while doing our best to follow the teachings and spirit of our Guru, Paramahansa Yogananda.

Spotlight

Meet the new resident in the back garden, Saint Francis!

When the bird bath broke, the search for a new statue began. There were a few different ideas but after remembering a talk by Brother Chidananda where he mentioned the connection between Paramahansa Yogananda's poem “God, God, God” and Saint Francis, the search was over.

Stop by and say hello or sit in peace and enjoy the beauty.

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy"

-Saint Francis

Volunteer Opportunity

We have a wonderful opportunity to serve Paramahansa Yogananda and the Center on Saturday October 18th for our fall day of service. We will be sprucing up the inside and outside for all the activities to come: Thanksgiving, Christmas and the monastic visit. We can use all your helping hands in various ways.

There is a meditation at 9:30 am before the work starts at 10 am and a vegetarian lunch to follow. Hope to see you there!

The True Nature of the Soul

Christmas Craft & Bake Sale

Highlights

Fall Retreat

Thirty-one devotees of the Portland Center of SRF attended the one-day silent retreat held at Alton Collins Retreat Center in Eagle Creek. The theme this year was “Silence”. It was a beautiful fall day, and the peaceful atmosphere, combined with the willingness of all in attendance to delve deeply into silence, made for an inspiring and highly devotional experience. Master’s presence and support were felt by all.

The Book Room

The Book Room has received copies of the 2026 Wall Calendar and Engagement Calendar. The new Self-Realization Fellowship publication “Solving the Mystery of Life” is also available, along with many other books, recordings and photographs.

Christmas Craft & Bake Sale

Calling all Bakers, Makers and Shoppers, we are having a Christmas Craft and Bake Sale on November 30th & December 7th. The perfect venue to share devotee talent and creativity while supporting Portland Center. This is a wonderful opportunity for Christmas shopping for the special people in your life.

Handmade and baked goods can be dropped off on November 28th and 29th at the Center between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Baked goods for December 7th ONLY, can be brought in on the day of the sale.
