Colleen Lavery Appointed Assistant Director of Finance

Colleen Lavery has joined the City as Assistant Director of Finance. "We are excited to welcome Colleen," said Finance Director Chris Minick. "Her municipal experience and financial management background will be a definite asset to the City as we all work together to uphold the high standards of fiscal responsibility the City is known for."
Lavery comes to St. Charles from the City of Wheaton where she served as the Assistant Director of Finance. There, she managed accounting, customer service, and purchasing departments, oversaw the annual audit, and assisted in the preparation of the budget and five-year financial plan.
She also previously worked for the City of Elgin as the Finance Director/Assistant Finance Director. Her duties consisted of managing the treasury functions of the city, serving as treasurer of the police and fire pension funds, and analyzing, evaluating, and implementing capital and operational initiatives.
Lavery holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Illinois State University and a master's degree in finance from Northern Illinois University. She is also a certified Fraud Examiner and a certified Public Accountant registered in the State of Illinois.

Your Chamber Membership

A year ago I wrote about how chamber members effectively use their chamber membership based on my experience on chamber boards and a member of the St. Charles Chamber membership committee.

So how has it been going? Have you taken advantage of the opportunities to gain value from your membership? We hope so because the St. Charles Chamber is one of the strongest I have been involved with and we have a great new leader Jim DiCiaula!

Below is a recap of my thoughts from a year ago and some upcoming chamber events you sure don't want to miss:

1)   Each business joins the chamber for different reasons.   A few reasons include: networking, marketing assistance, community involvement, branding for their business, development of their employees through various chamber educational programs, staying current on legislative issues or exposure for their business, product or service. Some upcoming events include the St. Charles Chamber Legislative City Update  So regularly log into the chamber's web site to see what's going on. We have more than 10 opportunities a month for you to connect with your chamber community.

2) Those that get involved in the chamber tend to gain most from their membership. Ways to get involved include, attending the various events each month, volunteering at least twice a year for a chamber event or participating on a standing chamber committee.

3) Members that stick with their membership look at it as a vital annual investment which enables their business to continue to grow. Not all good things happen quickly for businesses and a chamber membership tends to grow over time in terms of its importance for a business. Think of how many additional business owners and members of the business community you've met over the last year through chamber events.   This exposure is invaluable because you never know who may refer business to you based on a simple introduction you made at a chamber event. So keep at it and seek out chamber events that make sense for your business and consistently attend those events over the next year.
