October 13 - Learn About Indigenous Peoples' Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Día de la Raza) is celebrated the second Monday of October along with Columbus Day in many parts of the United States. According to Almanac.com, "Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America...This day promotes awareness of Indigenous peoples’ struggles, resilience, and unique traditions, fostering understanding and unity among diverse cultures." The day also serves as the conclusion for Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins in mid-September. Ttheme for Hispanic Heritage Month this year has been “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future." For history and resources visit the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of the American Latino. And check out the video highlighting the contribution of Latino agricultural workers shared by IDRC.

According to a recent study, the number of Americans reading for pleasure is down 40% over the past 20 years. The same study reported that only 2% of adults are reading with children on any given day.

A large study by the National Assessment of Educational Progress published 25 years ago showed the beginnings of that decline and also pointed to the numerous benefits of reading for pleasure including:

  • improved cognitive performance
  • language development
  • academic achievement
  • fewer mental health problems
  • less screen time
  • more sleep

Hispanic/Latino Mental Health

During this commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, it's useful to acknowledge the barriers to mental health for the Hispanic/Latino communities.

According to SAMHSA, Hispanics face high rates of mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Even though more than one in five Hispanic/Latino adults report having a mental illness, only 35.1% of them receive treatment each year, compared to the total U.S. average of 46.2%.
