How to Protect Yourself From SCAMS!
Scams are becoming more prevalent in our communities.  The thieves are more sophisticated with their approach and therefore deceiving more people. As your Sheriff, I want you to be informed of the scammer’s tricks in order for you to avoid becoming a victim.
·       If you won a prize, you will not be asked to send money for any kind of fees and that includes shipping.
·       Be leery of money-making schemes
·       Always check out any charities before donating in order to make sure they are legit.
·       Law Enforcement will never call you wanting to collect money for a warrant for your arrest. Second, Law Enforcement will never ask you to put money on a prepaid card such as green dot, money gram, western union etc
·       If you have to pay money for a prize, then you have not won a prize.
·       Ask yourself, “Did I enter this raffle, sweepstakes etc?”
·       If you are being rushed to decide, then it’s probably a scam.  When you hear words like “don’t miss this opportunity”, “Act Now”, it’s probably a scam.
·       If you hear a pause on the phone when you answer, hang up.  Do not feel you need to be polite to the caller.  Do not engaged in conversation just hang up your phone.

If you have been called by someone and you suspect it is a scam call, please contact the FCC and report.  1-877-ftc-help or  www.ftc.gov .  Also, I would encourage you to contact  www.donotcall.gov and place your phone numbers on this list. There is also a free app called hiya that you can download and report any spam numbers.

I ask that you be diligent with these scammers and not fall into being a victim.
Thanks!
Sheriff Stacy M. Jarrard

Hands Free: The Dangers of Distracted Driving

In 2015, 391,000 injuries and 3,477 traffic fatalities resulted from distracted driving. According to the Dept of Motor Vehicles, 9 people in the US are killed everyday from distracted driving.
Today at the GA Sheriff’s Association, Molly Welch, survivor of a crippling accident shared her story today for the Administrative Assistant Conference. Watch her story and put down the phones. It just takes a second to change your life forever.
Save a life and stop Distracted Driving. Heads up Georgia!
Thanks!

Hometown Heroes Recognized
Recently, I had the pleasure to attend the Connectability recognition of Hometown Heroes. It was a great evening with lots of participating agencies and members of the community. We are fortunate to live in a community with many great non-profits. Connectability is creating communities where people of all abilities are valued and empowered. Thank you Connectability for your outstanding work.
I appreciated the opportunity to meet some of our younger citizens at the preschool of the Dahlonega Baptist Church. They honored the First Responders of our community in a special service this month on 9/11. I stand proud with my fellow First Responders of the Army Military Division, Lumpkin County Fire Department, and Officers of the University of North Georgia.  What a great expression of appreciation from our younger citizens!
Thank you Dahlonega Baptist Church for recognizing us. It is a pleasure to serve

SHERIFF SPONSORED EVENTS
ADULT SPELLING BEE
Thank you to our Adult Spelling Bee Team for their participation in the Lumpkin Literacy Coalition last night. You did a great job and I am thankful for your support of this important organzation. This month for the first time in the history of the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office, we had 3 inmates to graduate from the GED program. This is such an important program to help change lives and it could not happen without the support of the Lumpkin Literacy Coalition and the support of Lanier Technical College. Thank you Deputy Sutton, Deputy Kimmel and Assistant District Attorney Blair Mahaffey for your representation.
Thanks!

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE THAT LIVES ALONE?
Did you know that at the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office we have a great program called "At Ease"? This program was designed with the individual in mind that may not have family that live in Lumpkin County to check on their welfare. Periodically, the 911 operators will make contact with the individual(s) to make sure everything is ok. According to the Lumpkin County Coroner, we have had 4 deaths this year that were not discovered for days and some weeks. If you would like someone to check on you or someone you know, please contact Rhonda Sheppard at (706) 482-2628 for more information.
WE HAVE A PROBLEM
pills.jpg
You have heard it in the news but often times we do not pay attention to the facts until we ourselves are touch with tragedy. Our country has a huge problem with drug addition and I'm not referring to illegal drugs but Prescription Drugs. The DEA is working hard with local physicians and pharmacies to reduce the number of scripts being written. Popular among our teenagers are "pill parties". They frequent the family medicine cabinet and take those expired or unused prescriptions to parties. Each teen dumps their "stash" in a punch bowl and then they "party". At the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office, we participate in a fantastic program called "Take Back Initiative". We have taken an old mail receptacle and turned it into a receptacle to receive expired prescriptions and unused prescriptions. Those prescriptions are then incinerated at the GBI office.

I encourage everyone in our county to do an inventory of your medicine cabinet and bring to the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office and drop off in our receptacle for your prescriptions. Also, I encourage you to get a lock box for your prescriptions and keep your family safe. Do your part and let's beat this epidemic together.
Thanks!

RELAY FOR LIFE PLATINUM

It was my pleasure to accept the Platinum Team Award from the Relay for Life Committee. The Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office raised $8,148.00 this past year. We could not have achieved this awesome accomplishment without the support of the community. This means a lot to me and I am grateful for the community in which I serve.
CONGRATULATIONS MORGAN

Congratulations to Deputy Corey Morgan for his completion of K-9 school. Deputy Morgan and his dog have just completed an extensive training to earn his certification. Congratulations Deputy Morgan. We look forward to having you on the K-9 team.
Thanks!
