The Birds Thank Mark Howell  of Cut Rite Tree Service
for his surgical, in-kind care of TAS's treasured oak trees.

Mark stepped up for the birds this year in a huge way by saving TAS a few thousand dollars in tree work. He surgically and thoughtfully trimmed back oaks overhanging the historic Doc Thomas House and the chickee in advance of hurricane season. He has been trimming trees in Miami for more than 30 years, is an owner/operater who does the trimming himself, and also provides stump grinding.

 Mark is a native South Miamian who is dedicated to restoring native habitat.  He has returned a large portion of his family's historic homestead on the corner of Red Road and SW 64 Street to Pine Rockland, and he serves in an as-needed advisory role to TAS. Come winter, he is a great resource for fire wood, too.

 Mark suggests trimming your non-fruit-bearing trees between  October and April . Fruit-bearing trees should be tended immediately after the last fruit falls (but  not  trimmed yearly).

 If you are in need of a load of clean mulch,  Mark can occasionally deliver it gratis depending on your location. This saves disposal dollars, keeps precious organic material out of landfills, helps enrich our soils and minimizes our irrigation needs.
Cut Rite Tip:

The period parlor at our Nationally Registered  Historic  headquarters is transformed into a vibrant art gallery during TAS's own  Art  Nite, when  Artist   Terry Arroyo Mulrooney  will be showcasing "SHY," an exhibition hanging at TAS through October .  Visit our Historic Headquarters, where TAS members can park for free.  Thirty percent of the proceeds from the sale of all  art  benefit Tropical Audubon Society.

Bill Boeringer will lead birders through A.D. Barnes Park. Enter on SW 72nd Ave. just north of Bird Rd. (SW 40th St.), turn left at the T intersection and park in spaces on either side of the road. Meet at 7:30am, returning at approximately 11:00am. No fee.

Sunday, October 11, 7:30-11am
Stephen Paez will lead birders through Kendall Indian Hammock Park. Meet at 7:30am at the parking area at the east end of the ballfields. Return is at approximately 11:00am. No fee.

Sunday, October 11, 9am-noon

John Boyd will lead this all day carpool trip. Meet in the parking lot of the Coe Visitor Center at Everglades National Park at 8:00am. There is an entrance fee to the park. Bring lunch.

Saturday, October 31 (Boo!), 8am-3pm 
Paul Bithorn will lead this carpool trip. Meet at 8:00am at the airboat concession on the north side of Tamiami Trail (US 41), one mile west of the Shark Valley entrance. There is an entrance fee to Shark Valley. Bring lunch. Bird at your own risk... bwaaahahahaha!

Paddle Out from Chapman Field
Sunday, October 11, 9:30am-1:30pm

This leisurely Paddle Out on Biscayne Bay will remind you of why we live here in the first place. BYO food and drink to enjoy as we paddle across the bay. 

 

Minimum age 9 years, accompanied by an adult. Wear closed-toe water shoes, long sleeves, swimwear recommended.  A $50 donation per paddler ($25 for TAS members) includes Paddle Out map, sticker and annual TAS membership.

Paddle Out from Chapman Field
Saturday, October 24, 4pm-8pm

Don't you think the world is more magical by moonlight?  We sure do!  Join us for an evening of kayaking, birding and catching up with friends.  We will launch from Chapman Field and paddle out to the bay to watch the sunset.  It is a leisurely paddle and everyone is encouraged to bring food and drink to enjoy while we float and bask in the moonlight.  We paddle back by the light of the moon (there will be glow sticks!).

Minimum age to participate is 9 years old with guardian.  Wear closed-toe water shoes, long sleeves, swimwear, and bug repellent. Bring food and drink.

TAS Executive Director Laura Reynolds is speaking at  1000 Friends of Florida  free  October webinar focusing on how Floridians can organize for positive community change. Using case studies and step-by-step "how-to's" , speakers will share effective strategies to mobilize citizens, build coalitions, get and keep media attention, persuade elected officials, raise funds and more. The webinar will conclude with a question and answer period.

We're flexible -- show up when you can, between 8:30 am and noon -- you will find a host of conservationists, birders, plant lovers and gardeners just like you lending a hand.
