Changing Your 
Happiness Set Point!

There is a great deal of talk about the happiness set point. The present level of acceptability for this theory is that your happiness is made up of 50% genetics, a set point, 10% circumstances and 40% intentional activity. 

Many people are stating other 50%, (the 10% circumstances and the 40% intentional activity) can be changed. I have some information for you. I think there is good reason that your 50% genetic happiness set point can be changed as well. 
 
One of the key books on this theory is Happiness, What Studies on Twins Show Us About Nature, Nurture, and the Happiness Set Point, by Dr. David Lykken. This book was published in 1999 and was a comprehensive work on the study of happiness for both fraternal and identical twins who were separated at birth. Dr. Lukken passed away September 15, 2006.

I will quote a paragraph from Dr. Lukken's book from page 60. "If your happiness set point is below average, that means that your genetic steersman is guiding you into situations that detract from your well-being and is tempting you to behave in ways that are counterproductive. If you let your genetic steersman have his way, then you will end up where he wants to go. But it is your life and, within wide limits, you can choose your own destinations instead of having them all chosen for you."

Dr. Lukken believed that the way to change our happiness set point was to work with the "thieves of happiness," as he called them. Dr. Lukken's three groups of happiness thieves are Depression, Fear and Shyness and Anger and Resentment. Dr. Lukken felt we could take effective action against these happiness-robbing factors.

It certainly seems that science is proving that we do inherit a certain predisposition to being happy. You can do a great deal about your happiness, regardless of your set point. The real truth is that people are not talking about the amount of happiness control we can develop. They believe that it's not about what you inherit that matters. This is not the sort of gene that determines how tall you will be or what color eyes you have.

Imagine that you have an inner thermostat in your mind that you can control. You begin to experience the fact that no matter how hot or cold it gets around you, you can control your inner response. The real set point for your happiness is what you set your inner thermostat to within yourself. If you become a little hot or cold, so to speak, you don't have to try to change your surroundings, just adjust or reset your inner happiness thermostat.
 
As you start using your brain to make the best choices, you will deal with your own personality. Your reactions to people and events can change for the better. You can create all the happiness you want by taking charge of your mind.

I would like to introduce you to Bob Nozik, M.D who wrote the book, Happy 4 Life: Here's How to Do It. Bob has been happy for over 30 years. I am privileged to know and love Dr. Nozik. He has been running the Diablo Valley Happiness Club in Lafayette, California for a number of years, as well as two other clubs. Here is what Dr. Nozik has said during our discussions on this topic.
 
"So, if set point theory is correct, and I believe it is, then we (at least I) must live with that truth. Here, it's not a real problem, because genetics are only part of the story. One is not, in fact, doomed to a life of unhappiness, because of having a low set point. There are things we can do to raise it. After all, I was born with a relatively low set point, I estimate it at about a D+ to a C-, and I've become pretty darn happy despite that."

I recommend reading Dr. Nozik's book, which is on my best 20-happiness book list. Bob can show you the ways that will lead you to happiness. You will learn about the deep abiding happiness, which he calls: lasting happiness that you can count on even through tough times.

The reason for my writing this article is that I would not want to see people believe that they must live out the rest of their lives being unhappy, because of what they have inherited from their parents. If we feed lack and limitation into the human mind, it will respond with a limited belief in how we can live. If we expect the best for ourselves and do the work to find it, we will live different lives than those who believe in things that are not good for them.

In the wonderful book, Thanks! How the new science of gratitude can make you happier, by Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., on page 35 he says, "Counting one's blessing may directly counteract the effects of hedonic adaptation, the process by which our happiness level returns, again and again, to its set-point, by preventing people from taking the good things in their lives for granted.

If we consciously remind ourselves of our blessings, it should become harder to take them for granted and adapt to them. And the very act of viewing good things as gifts is itself likely to be beneficial for mood."

We must learn that we are more powerful than any science experiment. Many things can be proven by science.
 
We have to remember that what we think, will do more to determine our well being. This is also true of our health. We can believe that we can only be as healthy as our family genes permit or we can do the things that enhance our health and optimize our longevity. This is not just a matter of doing things to be healthy, but a large part of how we think and how we act, which will determine, to a large extent, how we feel. 

Talking about optimizing our longevity, don't forget that it is science that has established the fact that being happy adds nine years to your life. I find this scientific fact to be a very useful and I incorporate it into my belief system. 

Happiness can become a habit and we all know how powerful habits can be. Furthermore, there is research that suggests that happiness produces more happiness. It is not only in your power to create the most happiness in your life, but it is in your power to make it a habit that you will benefit from for the rest of your happy life.

(National Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance) Twenty years ago, the Greenwich Chapter, recognizing the need within our community, started a chapter in Greenwich, Connecticut. We have been pleased both with the response to the program and with our ability to have helped hundreds of patients and family members. We hold weekly meetings on Fridays from 2:30 - 4:30 PM in a lovely residence in Greenwich, CT.
How Does It Work? The only requirement for participation in our group, which is open to patients and family members, is that the participant with depression or bipolar disorder be under the supervision of a psychiatrist.
There is no charge. Individuals with Depression or Bipolar Disorder from Fairfield and Westchester Counties are welcome to attend as are their friends and family who wish to learn more and be supportive.

The theory behind this second goal comes from a classic psychology study showing that by simply talking regularly about happiness we can become much happier. 
While we'll depart from them whenever and however much we may wish, like by talking about gratitude, acts of kindness, meditation and other happiness techniques, the following list of 14 topics will serve as a backdrop for our discussions. 
Here's some background on the research our group is based on. In 1980 three New Zealand researchers found that after eight 2-hour conversation sessions about happiness over four weeks, their subjects reported a 22 percent increase in their happiness. Continuing their twice-weekly sessions, by the sixteenth week they reported being 42 percent happier. This group has too many meetings each month to list. Hi Everyone, I'm writing to let you know I've just started a new group called People Who Need People - Exploring Relationships. It will meet each 1st and 3rd Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Barnes and Nobel in White Plains, New York. Here are some of the details: 
First, our events are always free, it's okay to arrive late or leave early, and rsvping isn't absolutely necessary to attend our meetings. 
A very dear friend once told me that life is about relationships. This twice-a-month Meetup is mostly about those who mean the most to us - our family, our romantic partner, and our friends. It is also about our co-workers and acquaintances, and about those special people we have yet to meet. Since about 90 percent of us here in the U.S. believe in God, or a higher power, it is also about our relationship with this power. Last, but certainly not least, it's also about our relationship with ourselves. 
Our group is really about our becoming happier. Why? Because decade after decade, as researchers have ask tens of thousands of us what our main source of happiness is, our number one answer has always been "other people."

BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT - BRIDGE HOUSE HAPPINESS CLUB
Celebrating over 12 years at the Bridge House Happiness Club. Our connection has been an incredible experience that keeps us growing. Bridge House is a Clubhouse which is modeled on the Fountain House model of psychiatric rehabilitation. The men and women who attend assist with the running of the program, which helps to restore their sense of purpose, dignity and self worth. I recommend reading: 365 Days of Happiness by Jacqueline Pirtle. You will benefit from the fact that she spent one year of her life committed to being happy by being mindful and aware of her everyday thoughts. The fact that she focused on happiness is what is most important. Take this book with you and find your way to your true happiness. Focus on the most important thing in your life: HAPPINESS!

"In order to have peace of mind, prepare yourself in advance to accept with serenity whatever occurs. 

People who expect everything to go the way they want are caught off balance by difficult life situations. 

Have an awareness that difficulties constantly arise. 

Being prepared in advance to accept what happens makes it much easier to cope with the vicissitudes of life.

When you feel anxiety about a future event, imagine the worst and accept it. This has a very calming effect. 

For example, if you are afraid you will miss a bus and feel anxiety, imagine you have already missed it and accept the consequences. 

If you are afraid you will be fired from your job, imagine you have already been fired and accept it.

Then "reality" can only get better!"

BERNARD S. SIEGEL, MD

Dr. Siegel prefers to be called Bernie, was born in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. He holds membership in two scholastic honor societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha and graduated with honors. His surgical training took place at Yale New Haven Hospital, West Haven Veteran's Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He retired from practice as an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Yale of general and pediatric surgery in 1989 to speak to patients and their caregivers.
    
In 1978 he originated Exceptional Cancer Patients, a specific form of individual and group therapy utilizing patients' drawings, dreams, images and feelings. ECaP is based on "carefrontation," a safe, loving therapeutic confrontation, which facilitates personal lifestyle changes, personal empowerment and healing of the individual's life. The physical, spiritual and psychological benefits which followed led to his desire to make everyone aware of his or her healing potential. He realized exceptional behavior is what we are all capable of.

Bernie, and his wife and coworker Bobbie, live in a suburb of New Haven, Connecticut. They have five children and eight grandchildren. Bernie and Bobbie have co-authored their children, books and articles. Their home with its many children, pets and interests resembled a cross between a family art gallery, museum, zoo and automobile repair shop. It still resembles these things, although the children are trying to improve its appearance in order to avoid embarrassment.
  
In 1986 his first book, Love. Medicine & Miracles was published. This event redirected his life. In 1989 Peace, Love & Healing and in 1993 How To Live Between Office Visits followed. He is currently working on other books with the goal of humanizing medical education and medical care, as well as, empowering patients and teaching survival behavior to enhance immune system competency. Bernie's realization that we all need help dealing with the difficulties of life, not just the physical ones, led to Bernie writing his fourth book in 1998 Prescriptions for Living. It helps people to become aware of the eternal truths and wisdom of the sages through Bernie's stories and insights rather than wait a personal disaster. He wants to help people fix their lives before they are broken, and thus not have to become strong at the broken places. Published in 2003 are Help Me To Heal to empower patients and their caregivers and 365 Prescriptions For The Soul, in 2004 a children's book about how difficulties can become blessings, Smudge Bunny, in 2005 101 Exercises For The Soul and out in the Fall of 2006 a prescriptions for parenting book Love, Magic & Mud Pies. Published in 2008 Buddy's Candle, for children of all ages, related to dealing with the loss of a loved one, be it a pet or parent, and published in 2009 Faith, Hope & Healing with inspiring survivor stories and my reflections about what they teach us. Also out is Words Swords, my poetry and chance to write and react with your own. In the Fall of 2011 A Book of Miracles was published with amazing stories and my comments. In September 2013 my latest book The Art of Healing was published containing 60 drawings by patients and what they reveal.. Out in November of 2015  Love, Animals & Miracles containing heartwarming inspiring and informative stories about life.
