Association of Lutheran Church Musicians

October 1, 2022 e-newsletter Corrected
Greetings from Executive Director Jim Rindelaub
Dear ALCM friends,

It was wonderful to see so many of you this summer at ALCM events. Michael Krentz led 41 of us on a tour of Bach and Luther sites in Germany, including the great Oberammergau Passion Play. Jeremy Bankson and his committee hosted over 200 ALCM members and others at Valparaiso University for a wonderful conference, our first since 2019. Over 120 additional members joined us virtually. I hope these and other continuing education experiences provided positive energy to you and your music programs. Plan now for your 2023 energy boost at next summer’s ALCM conference in Philadelphia!

I know you are including in your prayers the many people who this week suffered loss and damage due to Hurricane Ian. The ALCM members living in and near the Florida storm’s eye landfall are listed in the below Kyries and Glorias section. God bring comfort and strength to all facing challenges from natural disasters.

I am always so grateful for the way you prioritize ALCM in your charitable giving. Please join me again this year with a generous gift to ALCM. Your support nurtures and equips your musician friends across the county to serve and lead the church’s song.

With gratitude,
Jim Rindelaub

2023 Raabe Prize - Submissions Due Today!
Today is the last day for submissions for the Raabe Prize for Excellence in Sacred Music. The Raabe Prize is established to recognize a recent musical work that promotes and extends the practice of church music as it is informed and shaped by Lutheran theological insight and worship practices. The composition so recognized will have been written during the five-year period prior to the year in which the prize is awarded and should be representative of a larger body of work by the composer. Preference will be given to those compositions that grow out of the heart of Lutheran worship – the song of the assembly that enables all to lift their voices in prayer, praise, and proclamation as they gather around Word and Sacrament.

Join Us in Philadelphia!

Our conference theme: “What Wondrous Love: Living in Harmony,” is inspired by an early American hymn that may have some resonance with the location and the time of year at which we gather. And after an extended period of pandemic isolation and changed habits, how are we relearning and reshaping the ways we live in harmony with our neighbors? Our biennial conference will invite us into deeper reflection about the what, wonder, and love of which the church sings. Our four wonderful plenary speakers--Mark Miller, Jennifer Baker-Trinity, Jean Boehler, and the Rev. Dien Ashley Taylor--come to us with a richness of background and perspective, yet will lead us back to common ground: the wondrous story of God’s divine love revealed in Christ—a love that is deep, broad, high, amazing, and steadfast, that builds up and binds everything together in perfect harmony.

See you in Philadelphia!
Hearts • Hands • Voices are local half- or full-day skills-based workshops organized and hosted by ALCM members. If you are interested in hosting one of these events in 2023 or would like more information, contact Adam Lefever Hughes at education@alcm.org. Check out the HHV events already scheduled for 2023!

Bring whatever thoughts, comments, or concerns are on your mind, and of course a libation of your choice. Click on this recurring link to join each month.

Please note that, to better accommodate members in the western time zones, Fourth Fridays are moving to a starting time of 6:00 p.m. Eastern.

Weekly Compline
Participate with ALCM members in the contemplative sung service of Night Prayer posted each Monday evening at 8:30 Eastern on ALCM's Facebook page. Worship time just for you, led by President Nancy Raabe.
Enrollment for LSM 2023 is open!

Many young people who attend Lutheran Summer Music find their vocations in church music and music ministry. All find a joyful community of faith and belonging. The number one way a student finds their way to LSM is through the encouragement of their church music director. If there is a young musician in your life, consider nominating them at lsmacademy.org/nominate.

Students who apply by November 1 pay no application fee, so nominate a student today!
Events are published both in the website calendar and in the monthly newsletter. Do you have an event that you'd like to include? ALCM members should log in and follow the link on the main members area page. Non-members should send event details to office@alcm.org for consideration.

Do you have a story of "bumps along the way" in music ministry? We can relate to, laugh with, and take courage from people who know "the view from below" - stories of leaders who fail but grow stronger can teach, cheer, encourage, and unite us. If you have a winsome fiasco story or a more sober story of wisdom learned from experience with the worst and best of anything in church music and worship ministry, contact intempo@alcm.org for writer guidelines and future inclusion in In Tempo, ALCM’s practical resources magazine.

Are you a congregation looking for a musician?
A musician looking for a position?
ALCM can help!

Employment resources have been developed to assist congregations in the process of searching for and hiring a musician. Presented in a step-by-step format, these resources will guide you through the entire employment process.

The ALCM job listing service connects those looking for positions in the field of church music with congregations and other institutions that have openings. By completing an online job posting form, congregations can post their positions on the ALCM website where those looking for employment may view them.

Musicians searching for a job may view posted job openings on the ALCM website, where those looking for positions can view them. Both full-time and part-time positions are listed, and new positions are added as received.
