Happenings At
Lord Of Life Lutheran Church
"Where everybody is somebody, and Jesus is Lord!"

Time After Pentecost

Issue Of: October 1, 2022
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits - who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy."
Psalm 103:1-4 NRSV
Mask Policy At Lord Of Life
Lord Of Life's masking policy is based on Covid levels in Burlington County. Please check the CDC website for up to date information since the levels fluctuate rapidly. The current level will be stated in the weekly service information email. It will also be posted on the church entry doors.

Coffee Hour Fellowship
Every Sunday

Join us for Coffee Hour every Sunday following the 8:30 AM service or prior to the 10:00 AM service. Be with us in Fellowship Hall to socialize, catch up with church friends, enjoy some treats, and, of course, sip our "heavenly" coffee!
From The Pastor's Desk:

One of my favorite things to talk about with confirmands is "what is Church"? We know it's not a place - but it's a center. We know it's not only humans - but humans come to give and receive. It's not just what we do today - but today matters. We end up seeing that the Church is not a noun, but a verb - we are called to "Be Church." Being Church means reaching out, learning, serving, and encouraging one another in the midst of our sometimes messy lives.
Our financial stewardship team has chosen this fall's theme to help us Be Church together - it's called "Grace in Action." I hope you have stories of how the Church has been an active verb in your life - and how you can help us Be Church together.
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

First Things 1st - New Venture!:
During Autumn, we will have a special family-friendly worship time on the first Saturday of each month. All ages will find a welcoming worship service at 5:00 PM followed by a light dinner and then themed activities. On Saturday, October 1st, we will celebrate music! Come and learn a song with Rick, dance moves with Breanne, or guitar/ukelele with Pastor. Multiple stations mean you choose what activities you prefer. Our hope is that families will make a habit of coming for the first Saturday, and returning on the 3rd Sunday when we have a staffed nursery at our Sunday 10:00 AM service. The more we make a habit of coming to worship, the more we will experience God's love - so come join us at "First Things 1st!"

The Vanishing Half
by Brit Bennet
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters’ storylines intersect?
Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep
South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story
that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the
American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing
Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions,
desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms
in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their
origins.

Domestic Violence Discussion
Thursday, October 20th,
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Join us at Bridge of Peace Community Church (2755 Tuckahoe Road, Camden) on October 20, 2022 from 6:30-8:00 to learn more about Domestic Violence, hear from a survivor, and discover how churches can respond to Domestic Violence through their ministries.
Do you know that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men experience sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime? October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. More than a black eye, domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive or coercive behavior used to gain and maintain power and control over another person. This includes emotional abuse, financial control, intimidation, pet abuse, sexual coercion and so much more. And it happens everywhere, in all communities. Become aware and informed; this is vital information that could save a life. If you have any questions, please contact Betty Mastrillo. A link to her email is below.

Helping Hands Ministry
Wednesday, October 26th,
At 9:30 AM
(For The Christian Caring Center)
Helping Hands, is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. We form an assembly line and make over 200 sandwiches in an hour. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese in a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us! If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.

MORE Athletic Shoe Collection
MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycled athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.
You can contribute your used sneakers or athletic shoes by placing them in the collection box located in the church entryway. Please sneaker-type used footware only, no dress or other shoes.

You may also click on the link below to either join our team or support it by making a tax deductible online donation. Last year our team “finished” in 23rd place, out of 102 teams that participated, by raising $1,057. We are determined to top that mark this year. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Help For Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia (CHOP)
The Mc Michael family is supporting CHOP by collecting various items. Here is a message from Maureen and John:
Throughout this past year, our family spent a lot of time at CHOP and they were absolutely wonderful. We wanted to give back to them by collecting items for their Child Life program. Child Life helps kids feel at ease while in the ER or during their visit by bringing them card games, slime, toys, activity books, crayons, fidget toys, stress balls, etc. (See the image below.)
If you would like to help us with this collection, we would greatly appreciate it! We will be collecting through the end of October and then we will bring everything in to donate! Please bring items to the box in the Narthex at Lord of Life. Thank you for your support!
Haiti Update
From
Penny Miller
I am happy to report that Hope Alive Clinic in Haiti continues to see patients daily. Approximately 500 patients a month are seen. Solace Center for malnourished babies also keeps providing much needed care to these medically fragile children.
The Sewing Academy also continues. They have started the eleventh year teaching young women to sew.
Those of you who are aware of the political atmosphere in Haiti, know that it is dangerous to walk the streets due to gang violence. The gangs have taken over towns, villages, and even the police force. There have been times when students could not get to our school because it was too dangerous. Yet they do not give in or give up on the opportunity to attend school and learn a trade.
I am in touch with the administrator of the school monthly and given an update of attendance and supplies. I collect sewing notions and sewing machines here in the US and ship to them twice a year. Each student is given a sewing kit with scissors, needles, pins, pencils and a notebook. Thread and zippers are also needed. If you have the desire to donate any of these items, please leave them in a bag with my name on it in the kitchen. Every thimble or spool of thread helps improve the life of a young woman in Haiti.
God’s Peace,
Penny Miller

Wednesdays Away

If you are looking for a time of spiritual renewal, the Cross Roads staff will, once again, offer an opportunity throughout the year with their Wednesdays Away program. Our time together includes prayer and conversation, led by a spiritual director and focusing on a different spiritual practice or theme each month. These retreats are open to all people interested in exploring new faith practices. Attend one or attend all—and be sure to invite friends to join you.
We are excited to share that we will return to offering in-person gatherings for the 2022-2023 season. Each retreat will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in person at Cross Roads (check-in will begin at 9:30 AM). The cost is $50 per in-person gathering (includes lunch). Out of love for our community and in response to the current pandemic, we have established the following protocols for the in-person Wednesdays Away sessions: participants must be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination as well as negative results from a COVID test taken within 72 hours of the event date. For more information and to register, click on the link below.
National Lutheran Choir
Announces Programs
For 2022-2023
Season passes, subscriptions, and tickets are available for the National Lutheran Choir's 37th season! This year, we are celebrating the choir's "Second Generation" with Artistic Director David Cherwien, who will be retiring at the end of the season.
"This season we invite you to join us as we acknowledge that the choir of yesterday and today will carry on for generations to come. As our lives change so does our understanding of God. But one thing is certain: God does not change. Whether you can attend our events live or virtually, we have many experiences in store for you this season."

Join Our Teller Team!
We are looking to increase our Teller Team membership. The Tellers count the weekly contributions on Sunday mornings. The more teams we have the fewer the times our teams need to be present for the Sunday work sessions. We currently have 3 Teller Teams and we would like to operate with 4 Teller Teams. Training will be done prior to an assignment. If you can help with this vital and necessary task, please contact the church Financial Secretary, Carol Ebersberger. A link to her email is below.
Continuing Your Contributions
Your continuing financial support is essential to maintain the Ministries of Lord Of Life. Offerings are being collected at all church services. If you are still not attending services at our church building, your contribution can be mailed to the church (1 Winchester Court, Tabernacle, NJ 08088). Both Simply Giving and Tithe.ly remain in place for all to use. (More information about these electronic ways to contribute can be found on the church's website. The link is below.)

From The Editor:

LifeLines Ending Song:
Folliott S. Pierpoint (1835-1917) was 29 at the time he wrote this hymn. He was mesmerized by the beauty of the countryside that surrounded him. The words first appeared in 1864 in a book of Eucharistic Hymns and Poems entitled "Lyra Eucharistica, Hymns and Verses on The Holy Communion, Ancient and Modern, with other Poems.” It was written as a Eucharistic hymn - hence the title of "The Sacrifice of Praise.” The text was modified by the publishers of "Hymns Ancient and Modern" for the 1916 Hymnbook, so it could serve as a more general hymn. The tune, of which we are familiar, was written by Conrad Kocher in 1838. It was also used for William Chatterton Dix’s Christmas carol, “As With Gladness Men Of Old.” The hymn is in our ELW as #879. It credits all three men for its creation: Text by Pierpoint, Music by Kocher, and Tune title by Dix.

"Christ, our God, to thee we raise, this our sacrifice of praise."
