Ryan Marsden
Manager, High Performance & Leadership
Ryan is joining the team as the newest Manager overseeing High Performance programming, including Team Alberta, and building professional development opportunities for members in leadership roles at VA. Ryan will also be responsible for PIA checks for all assistant coaches. Ryan will be based in the Calgary office, and we are excited for him to bring his many years of experience in high performance volleyball to the team.

Dione Kristel
Manager, Age Class & Events
Dione is no stranger to Volleyball Alberta having gone through the system as an athlete and coach; she will be taking on the role of Age Class and Events Manager. Dione’s primary responsibilities will be overseeing the 13U/14U age class, Alberta Winter & Summer Games, Edmonton beach programs (John Fry Park), and managing facility bookings. She is working out of the north office in Edmonton and we’re extremely happy to have her on board for the upcoming season!

Brook Ure
Coordinator, Age Class & Beach
Please welcome Brook Ure, she has recently moved to Alberta after working in the Okanagan for Volleyball BC. She is a Sport Management graduate from Camosun College, where she was a middle blocker on their varsity team. She is taking on the newly created position of Age Class and Beach Coordinator, facilitating the 17U/18U age class, beach and outdoor tournaments, merchandise sales, and social media. Brook is based out of the Calgary office and is a welcomed addition to our team!

Person in Authority (PIA) Checks & Screening
Screening of club leaders, coaches, team staff, and volunteers in our sport is an important part of providing a safe sport environment. Clubs must complete PIA Checks for all their leaders prior to beginning their roles or working with athletes.

VA Sanctioned Tournaments
Registered clubs in good standing can apply to have their 12U-18U tournament(s) sanctioned by Volleyball Alberta. Sanctioned tournaments receive insurance coverage for the tournament which covers all members participating in the tournament, advertisement on the Volleyball Alberta website Club Hosted Tournaments page, and Volleyball Alberta will do its best to provide certified referees for all sanctioned tournaments. To apply for tournament sanctioning, please use our Club Hosted Tournaments Form.

Early Stages Grant
Volleyball Alberta is excited to announce that we are recipients of the Every Kid Can Play Grant. The goal of this grant is to enhance and increase the affordability of our GO Sports Program.
What does this mean for clubs?
To grow this program, we are providing funding support up to $3500 for clubs to expand their early stages and recreation development programs. Early stages programs are sessions that target kids ages 6-12, whereas recreation development programs are targeted towards ages 13-17.

We are thrilled to announce that starting this Winter, VA's GO Sports programs will be offered in 3 locations! Since 2011, Volleyball Alberta has offered GO Sports Programs in Edmonton for youth in the Fall, Winter, and Spring at the Saville Community Sport Centre. These programs are great for kids new to volleyball or having some experience. The goal is to provide the foundational skills kids and youth need to be successful in the game of volleyball. We are excited to work with the Dow Centennial Centre in Fort Saskatchewan and Genesis Centre in Calgary to offer these early-stage volleyball programs in their community!

School Sessions
We are excited to launch an initiative in Edmonton and surrounding areas to help grow the game of volleyball for kindergarten to grade 6. We are now booking in-class sessions with schools to introduce Volleyball Canada’s newest version of Volleyball – Smashball.

Volleyball Canada requires all head coaches to have a minimum of Development Coach Workshop to earn their Trained status for VC Nationals. Similarly, Volleyball Alberta has the same NCCP requirement for eligibility for Provincial Championships.
