October 12 Greetings
Dear Ones,

It’s Monday of a new week as we continue to “Be Church Together” even as the church building is closed for gatherings. I have lost a few friends recently. Although I haven’t seen them in a while, I still feel the sadness of knowing they are no longer just a phone call away. As I get older, I find that this sense of loss is sharper, probably because that is the nature of growing older: more folks you know die. I came across this meditation, and it comforted me. It is from a Reformed Jewish liturgy, to be read before Kaddish, part of a Jewish prayer service, written by Merritt Malloy. I feel in some ways that this is the heart of the gospel: Jesus shared this kind of love, and gave us an example of how to do it.
Epitaph

When I die give what’s left of me away
to children and old men that wait to die.
And if you need to cry,
cry for your brother walking the street beside you.
And when you need me, put your arms around anyone
and give them what you need to give me.

I want to leave you something,
Something better than words or sounds.
Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved,
and if you cannot give me away,
At least let me live in your eyes and not in your mind.

You can love me best by letting hand touch hands,
and by letting go of children that need to be free.
Love doesn’t die, people do.
So when all that’s left of me is love,
give me away.

We are updating the photo directory! Because we are not meeting in the church building yet, we are asking you to submit your own picture. You can take a selfie with your phone or have someone else take it for you. Please have a solid background and include your smiling face and upper torso. You can email them to the church office at emmanuelelca@gmail.com, or text them to me on my cell phone at 301-890-9785. (Make sure you include your name.) We would like to have the pictures by month end. We will start tracking folks down after the first of November, and possibly come take a picture of you on your front porch! It would be great to get a new directory out to everyone by Thanksgiving!

Tim and I will be taking a week of vacation beginning next Monday, October 19. Pr. Adam Bissell and seminarian Gail Kenny are officiating at the services on October 25. Mary Jensen is taking the week of October 26 off, and Kimberly, the first week in November. Mary is looking for folks to staff the phones in the church office the week she is gone, as well as Wednesday, October 21 (her regular day off). Call her in the church office if you can help.
The church office is staffed from 9:00am to 1:00pm most weekdays. Please call ahead to let us know that you are coming or knock loudly when you have arrived!
Remember that we are asking everyone to wear masks when you are in the building with others, especially for those working the Interfaith Meal! If you need a mask, we have extras in the church office.

In Memory of Judy Nielsen from the Emmanuel Quilters:

A Quilter's Prayer

Heavenly Father,
You have Blessed me with a quilter's heart.
I pray that the quilt colors I choose reflect the beauty of your world.
I pray that my stitches be straight and strong.
May those who receive my quilts find comfort, smile,
and know that they were made with love.
Your Blessing has given me the joy of creativity,
the kinship of quilter friends and the gift of service.
For all of these, I Thank You Father.    Amen
(by D.M.)
A Bible verse for today:
Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
