Fifth Sunday of the Exaltation

On Sunday, October 8, His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan, Prelate, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. Sarkis Church. During the Liturgy, he ordained twelve acolytes: Sarine Cherbetjian, Serge Cherbetjian, Joseph Garabedian, Vartan Karapetian, Lori Kevorkian, Nareg Kevorkian, Haig Nazaretian, Jacob Schlecher, Lucas Schlecher, Alexan Topouzian, Tsoleen Zulkiewski, and Viken Zulkiewski. He also conceded the rank of subdeacon to Alexander Kurkechian and Berj Vartanian.

In his sermon, the Prelate expressed his joy over the ordinations as they coincided with the celebration of the Feast of the 72 Holy Disciples of Christ the day before, according to the Armenian liturgical calendar. Whether an Apostle or a Disciple, an acolyte or a subdeacon or a clergyman of any rank, the Prelate said, they justify their vocation as a reflection of Christ and serving with his life the luminous faith predicated by Him, the hope and love that modern society needs so badly as it suffers amid uncertainty and following the wrong ways. 

The church’s 61st anniversary and the parish’s 91st anniversary were celebrated in the parish hall after the Divine Liturgy, this event was sponsored by the Kurkechian and the Vartanian families, in honor of the ordination of Alexander and Berj . Rev. Fr. Hrant Kevorkian, Pastor, thanked all the church bodies and the faithful for their unreserved dedication and the newly consecrated acolytes and subdeacons for their loyalty. In remarks that followed, Archbishop Anoushavan praised Fr. Hrant for his spirit of initiative, which helped with the renovation of the church and the parish hall, with the full support of the Board of Trustees, associated bodies and organizations. 

The memorable day ended with a benediction and the traditional singing of Giligia.  

We congratulate our newly ordained sub-deacons and acolytes and pray for their fruitful service to God through the Armenian Apostolic Church. Many thanks to the St Sarkis Church Ladies' Guild for organizing the anniversary fellowship.

It is our norm to hold a raffle during the annual bazaar to benefit our church. This year, after seeing the devastating news of Artsakh, and having over 100,000 displaced Armenians, we would like to dedicate the proceeds of our Grand Raffle to the Artsakh Armenians. We will sell 300 tickets for $100 each, and the prizes are as follows: first prize $3000, second prize $2000, and third prize $1000. The raffle will be drawn on November 5, 2023 at 3:00pm.

The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ According to St. Mark 12:35-44

While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, by the Holy Spirit, declared, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’

David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.

As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”



The Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians 2:1-10

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up in response to a revelation. Then I laid before them (though only in a private meeting with the acknowledged leaders) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure that I was not running, or had not run, in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. But because of false believers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us—we did not submit to them even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might always remain with you. And from those who were supposed to be acknowledged leaders (what they actually were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those leaders contributed nothing to me. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel for the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter making him an apostle to the circumcised also worked through me in sending me to the Gentiles), and when James and Cephas and John, who were acknowledged pillars, recognized the grace that had been given to me, they gave to Barnabas and me the right hand of fellowship, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. They asked only one thing, that we remember the poor, which was actually what I was eager to do.

ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՐԿՈՍԻ 12:35-44

Յիսուս տաճարին մէջ ուսուցանելու ընթացքին հարցուց ժողովուրդին.

– Օրէնքի ուսուցիչները ի՞նչպէս կ’ըսեն՝ թէ Քրիստոս Դաւիթի Որդին է, երբ Դաւիթ ինք Սուրբ Հոգիէն ներշնչուած՝ կ’ըսէ.-

    «Տէրը ըսաւ իմ Տիրոջս.-

Աջ կողմս նստէ,

մինչեւ թշնամիներդ ոտքերուդ տակ դնեմ

որպէս պատուանդան»:

Եթէ Դաւիթ զայն Տէր կը կոչէ, ինչպէ՞ս ուրեմն Քրիստոսը անոր որդին է:

Ժողովուրդը հաճոյքով մտիկ կ’ընէր Յիսուսի, որ իր ուսուցումները շարունակելով, կ’ըսէր.

– Զգո՛յշ եղէք Օրէնքի ուսուցիչներէն, որոնք կը սիրեն փառաւոր զգեստներով շրջիլ, հրապարակներու վրայ մարդոցմէ յարգալիր բարեւներ ընդունիլ, ժողովարաններու մէջ առաջին աթոռները գրաւել եւ ընթրիքներու ընթացքին՝ պատուոյ տեղերը: Մէկ կողմէ այրիներուն տուները անոնց ձեռքէն կը յափշտակեն, իսկ միւս կողմէ կեղծաւորութեամբ իրենց աղօթքը կ’երկարեն: Ասոր համար աւելի՛ խիստ դատապարտութիւն պիտի ընդունին:

Յիսուս կեցած էր տաճարի գանձանակին մօտ եւ կը դիտէր ժողովուրդը, որ դրամ կը նետէր գանձանակին մէջ: Շատ մը հարուստներ մեծ գումարներ նետեցին: Աղքատ այրի մըն ալ եկաւ եւ նետեց երկու լումայ, որ դահեկան մը կ’ընէ: Յիսուս մօտը կանչեց իր աշակերտները եւ ըսաւ անոնց.

– Վստա՛հ գիտցէք, որ այս թշուառ այրին բոլորէն շատ դրամ նետած եղաւ գանձանակին մէջ, որովհետեւ միւսները իրենց աւելորդ գումարներէն նետեցին, մինչ անիկա, հակառակ չքաւոր ըլլալուն, ինչ որ ունէր՝ նետեց, իր ամբո՛ղջ ապրուստը:

ԹՈՒՂԹ ԳԱՂԱՏԱՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ 2:l-10

Այնուհետեւ, տասնըչորս տարի ետք կրկին Երուսաղէմ գացի Բառնաբասին հետ, Տիտոսն ալ միասին առնելով: Գացի, որովհետեւ Աստուած յայտնեց որ երթամ: Այնտեղ, Երուսաղէմի եկեղեցիին զեկոյց տուի հեթանոսներուն մէջ կատարած քարոզութեանս մասին: Առանձնաբար զեկոյց տուի նաեւ եկեղեցւոյ ղեկավարներուն, որպէսզի զուր տեղը աշխատած չըլլամ եւ չաշխատիմ: Անոնք բնաւ չստիպեցին որ թլփատուի ինծի ընկերացող Տիտոսը, որ հեթանոս Յոյն մըն էր: Թլփատութիւն պահանջողները քանի մը կեղծ քրիստոնեաներ էին, որոնք հաւատացեալներու շարքերուն մէջ սպրդած էին՝ Յիսուս Քրիստոսով մեր ունեցած ազատութիւնը լրտեսելու եւ մեզ Մովսիսական օրէնքներու ծառայութեան մէջ պահելու համար: Բայց վայրկեան մը իսկ տեղի չտուինք անոնց, որպէսզի վստահ ըլլաք՝ թէ ճշմարիտ էր ինչ որ ձեզի քարոզեցինք:

Գալով անոնց՝ որոնք եկեղեցւոյ ղեկավարները կը համարուէին, ինծի համար բնաւ կարեւորութիւն չունի թէ անցեալին ի՛նչ եղած են անոնք: Աստուած մարդոց միջեւ խտրութիւն չի դներ: Արդ, ղեկավար համարուած այդ առաքեալները ոեւէ նոր բան չըսին ինծի այս մասին: Ընդհակառակը, երբ տեսան թէ Աստուած ինծի վստահած է հեթանոսներու քարոզութիւնը, ինչպէս Պետրոսի յանձնած էր Հրեաներու քարոզութիւնը –որովհետեւ Աստուած ինչպէս Պետրոսի առաքելութիւնը յաջողցուց Հրեաներուն մէջ, նոյնպէս ալ իմ առաքելութիւնս յաջողցուց հեթանոսներուն մէջ–, այն ատեն՝ Յակոբոս, Կեփաս եւ Յովհաննէս, որոնք եկեղեցւոյ սիւները կը համարուէին, ճանչցան Աստուծմէ ինծի տրուած շնորհքը, իմ եւ Բառնաբասի ձեռքը թօթուելով հաւանութիւն տուին որ մենք հեթանոսներուն մէջ աշխատինք, իսկ իրենք՝ Հրեաներուն: Միայն խնդրեցին, որ Երուսաղէմի աղքատներուն օգնել չմոռնանք. բան մը, որուն համար ես սրտանց աշխատեցայ:
