FROM PASTOR SARAH
Beloved of God,

On Sunday, we will celebrate the baptism of two children of the congregation! I love baptisms because we get to welcome and recognize individuals as Children of God and part of our community. We also get to remember that each of us is a Child of God, and that together, we are called to be about the work of building God's kingdom.

Also on Sunday, we will read the moment in Matthew's Gospel when Jesus reminds the leaders of the Temple in Jerusalem, who are trying to trick him, that God calls us to our civic duties as well as our religious.

In other words, our call from God is not just about what we do when we're in church, or making sure we watch church for 45 minutes on Sunday. God calls us to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ is every aspect of our lives.

Right now, two-and-a-half weeks out from election day, part of our vocation is to make sure that we vote. You will decide how you feel called to vote. My prayer for our country is that on the other side of this election, we will emerge a less divided, less individualistic society. We have a lot of work to do together so that life can improve for all God's people and God's good creation.

Let's be people who are known for doing as God calls us in Micah 6:8 - doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.

In Christ, Pastor Sarah

P.S. See below to meet your new Bridge Pastor!

P.P.S. I hope you'll stop by worship on October 25th to say goodbye! That will be my last Sunday with you.
To the People of St. Paul Lutheran Church:
Greetings! My name is Christoph Schmidt, and I was recently called to be your "bridge pastor"
to help bridge the gap between Pastor Sarah and your next long-term pastor. Thank you to
Pastor Sarah for all her work as your interim pastor, and thank you for entrusting me to be your
short-term pastor.

A little about me: I grew up in Bemidji and Fargo, studied music at Concordia in Moorhead, and went to seminary in Philadelphia. After ordination in 2011 I served in campus ministry and at a rural two-point parish in North Dakota. Most recently I've been a stay-at-home-dad to our three children - Peter (3), Rhoda (4), and Magdalene (9). My wife, Taryn, serves as pastor at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, where we live. I like woodworking, music, turning wooden bowls, camping, and playing with my kids. And I'm a long-suffering but loyal Vikings fan.

These are strange and challenging times that we all find ourselves in within our church, lives, and society. My hope is that these coming months of transition at St. Paul be a time of comfort and mutual support as we look toward God's promises of new life in 2021. I'm looking forward to being with you, starting November 1st .

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Christoph

CONGREGATIONAL CARE AND FELLOWSHIP
NURSE'S CORNER

We are blessed to have knowledgeable and caring nurses in our congregation! They have some words of advice for us:

Vaping or e-cigarettes have been gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional cigarettes, but the question is are they less harmful?  According to John Hopkins Medicine there are several problems with vaping. These include:

 1. Thinking there are less chemicals in vaping and although this is true we are not sure what chemicals are in vaping and there have been other injuries associated with vaping.
2. Vaping is bad for your heart and lungs, nicotine is in both of these and increases blood pressure and is highly addictive.
3. As discussed above, nicotine is highly addictive and often vaping means more nicotine not less, so this is still an addictive habit.
4. Using this as a quitting technique actually doesn't work, often people end up vaping and smoking traditional cigarettes.
5. More and more young people are starting vaping as an alternative to cigarettes which may lead to cigarettes later in life.

There was a 900% increase of vaping in 2015 (www.hopkinsmedicine.com).  This essentially defeats the whole smoking problem as we know that smoking is one of the worst habits and is very detrimental to your health as it harms almost all organs in your body.  For more resources about vaping check out www.drugabuse.gov and kidshealth.org

Remember to pray for these nurses and all those on the front lines fighting the coronavirus.
SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School will meet on October 25th immediately following the 9:00 am worship service. This might be the last time we meet in person for the fall, so we would love to have all of our Sunday School kids join us for Reformation Sunday, Pastor's last service with us and a fun close to the fall.

Please remember to dress according to the weather and bring blankets to keep warm. We will try to have a short parent meeting at the beginning of the class to discuss what Sunday School will look like for the winter months.

Please contact Chris and Katie at [email protected] if you have any questions.
