And Finally...

The Stearns/Clark/LCD Intersection

With the LB Utilities (Water Dept.) construction on Stearns and Palo Verde, we were reminded of a story we did in 2021 about the major alteration of Stearns circa 1950. Stearns Street was “adjusted” to curve to the north at the intersection of Clark Avenue and Los Coyotes Diagonal. Having grown up in that area, the "urban legend" was that the curve was added to slow traffic on Stearns after a speed-related accident at the intersection. We asked our Traffic Engineering Department if there was any evidence in the archives supporting the speed mitigation theory, but we learned there are no digitized roadwork plans dating back that far. However, Traffic Engineering did offer another explanation that takes into account future widening of the streets. They suggested that the curve looks like a win-win situation that lines up the new larger cross-section of Clark on the east side of the Bouton Creek channel with Stearns and LCD, and it introduces some "traffic calming".

Speaking of traffic engineering, there is no record as to who came up with the idea for the Stearns curves. However, we do know that the designer of the Traffic Circle in 1930, Werner Ruchti, was the City Traffic Engineer through the 1940's and 50's. We have no way of knowing if he had a hand in the Stearns design, but we do know he had an affinity for curved roads some 20 years earlier.

Aerial photo attached from May 1, 1947 shows Stearns St. in a straight line crossing Clark and LCD (circled in red). Los Altos at right shows houses being built on on Abbeyfield.

Aerial photo attached from November 17, 1952 shows the "Stearns Curve" at Clark and LCD. Red arrows indicate Fire Station 17, Our Lady of Refuge and Bixby Elementary.
