COASTAL FLOODING POSSIBLE NEXT WEEK

Gloucester residents, it's not too early to start preparing for the possibility of coastal flooding next week!

Weather forecast models are increasingly indicating that a coastal low-pressure system could linger offshore for much of next week, potentially bringing:

  • Moderate to major coastal flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
  • Gusty winds, especially along the coast and waterways.
  • Prolonged impacts, with flooding and windy conditions potentially lasting for several days.

While there is still uncertainty surrounding the storm's exact track and impacts, residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to remain weather-aware and begin reviewing their preparedness plans.

Gloucester County will continue monitoring the forecast and sharing updates as more information becomes available.

Stay informed, Gloucester! Make sure you're signed up for BEE Alert to receive important emergency notifications:

George Bains has had a legendary career with Gloucester County, stretching back to 1988.

From helping build the reservoir we depend on for clean water, to forging a path as our first Director of IT, to instituting addresses in the more rural parts of our community, George has made a huge impact on day-to-day life in Gloucester.

He's served as the Interim County Administrator since April, and he's getting ready to pass the torch to Dr. C. Scott Davis in November.

We sat down to talk about the challenges and highlights of George's time here, and what he thinks could be next for the County.

The Comprehensive Plan serves as our community’s roadmap for the future, helping guide decisions about growth, development, services and quality of life over the next 10–20 years.

And we want YOUR input!

Whether you’ve lived in Gloucester your entire life or recently made it home, your ideas and perspectives matter.

Offered by Common Ground Worship Foundation: This one will be a little different. More acoustic, more intimate, just a chance to come together and lift up the name of Jesus under the stars.

Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, find a spot, and worship with us. A huge thank you to our friends at House of Ren for hosting Common Ground on the front lawn.

We’ll also be taking up an offering for Victoria Mack and her family. Victoria recently lost her daughter, Carley, after a long and difficult battle with her health. As a community, we want to surround her with love and support during this incredibly difficult season.

Come as you are. Let’s worship together and show what it looks like to truly be there for one another.

Concert at Abingdon Church features:

Svyati Duo, organ and cello

Friday October 23, 2026 @ 7 PM

White Marsh, Gloucester County, October 23, 2026 – Abingdon Episcopal Church, on Route 17 in White Marsh, Gloucester County, will be hosting Svyati Duo, organ and cello, in the 2nd concert this season in the Arts at Abingdon Concert Series, our 38th year. The concert will be held Friday, October 23, 2026 at 7:00 PM at the church. Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted. No reservations required.

The duo takes its name from Julian Collings and Rebecca Hepplewhite’s first collaboration as conductor and cellist in a performance of Tavener’s masterpiece ‘Svyati’ for solo cello and choir. Sir John Kenneth Tavener subsequently became the duo’s Patron the following year and remained so until his death in 2013.

Rebecca and Julian maintain a diverse and exciting repertoire, from Baroque sonatas through to substantial romantic and contemporary works, and are committed to performance music that displays the diversity of their wonderful instrumental combination.

Let's work together to protect pets from rabies in Gloucester

Gloucester County Animal Control is partnering with some community organizations to offer a drive-through rabies clinic on November 7 at Gloucester High School.

Normally, rabies vaccines cost $20-$75, so getting your dog or cat protected for $10 is a win-win! You get to save money, and Friends of Gloucester County Animal Control VA gets donations to help take care of our shelter dogs.

Some FAQs about this event - there's no limit to how many pets you can bring through. Herd of hunting beagles? Bring 'em on! Crazy cat lady? We're crazy about your dedication to getting them vaccinated.

And no, you don't have to be from Gloucester to bring a pet through the clinic.

State law requires all dogs and cats over four months old to have a rabies vaccine. This is a great way to get that squared away. Take your sidekick for a pup-cup afterward; make a date of it!

Honor a Loved One. Keep a Gloucester Tradition Alive.

During the holiday season, Gloucester transforms into a warm and festive community, reminding us to pause, reflect and celebrate the people who have helped make our community so special.

The anchor to our downtown holiday tradition is the community tree. As of 2026, the tree is officially managed by Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism, and we pledge to continue the memorial recognition tradition of generous donors with honor and respect.

Residents are invited to submit a name in memory of someone special with a $50 contribution to support the Community Tree tradition.

Your loved one’s name will be displayed on a memorial banner in the Courthouse Circle from December 1, 2026 through January 4, 2027. Their name will also be read aloud during the Community Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5 p.m. on December 5, following the Gloucester Christmas and Holiday Parade.

GCPS CORNER

We are pleased to announce that at last night's School Board meeting, the Board approved the appointment of Ms. Lacie Harman as our new Director of Special Education.

Ms. Harman brings more than 18 years of experience in special education, including classroom instruction, school leadership, compliance, and divisionwide program administration. She currently serves as Coordinator of Special Education for Secondary Instruction and Transition in York County School Division.

Throughout her career, Ms. Harman has demonstrated a commitment to supporting students with disabilities, strengthening instructional practices, and building meaningful partnerships with families, teachers, and school administrators.

In addition to her service in public education, Ms. Harman served nearly nine years in the Air National Guard as an F-22 Avionics Specialist at Langley Air Force Base, including active duty service.

She holds master's degrees from the College of William & Mary and Old Dominion University, as well as a bachelor's degree in Special Education from Youngstown State University.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Harman to Gloucester County Public Schools. I look forward to the experience, leadership, and commitment to service she brings to our students, families, and staff.

Thank you to Casper and Officer Brill for being on hand at last night’s School Board meeting. Casper turns 2 on October 31!

The meeting highlighted student achievement, community service, and updates supporting GCPS students and staff.

Dr. Stefan Mygas and Dr. Brian Fries presented the 2026 accreditation and accountability results. Six schools earned Distinguished ratings: Abingdon, Achilles, Bethel, Petsworth, Page, and Peasley. Botetourt Elementary and Gloucester High School Meet Expectations.

GCPS also ranks #1 academically in Region 3 for the second consecutive year. VDOE’s Region 3 snapshot places Abingdon, Botetourt, Petsworth, Peasley, and GHS among the top five schools at their respective levels, with GHS leading the region in science mastery.

These results reflect the work of students, teachers, staff, and families. Parents, positive experiences deserve to be shared, too. Please share your honest feedback about GCPS on Niche, not only when something goes wrong. Select “Parent,” then “Next.” Participation is voluntary.

• Deputy Superintendent Bryan Hartley provided updates on the Capital Improvement Plan, food service, and kitchen equipment.
