Sports Haiku --
Draymond Punched Jordan
| |
Haiku: A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Sports Today! has expanded Haikus to embrace our readership and invites you to submit your own. Top entries will be published!
Thank you for your many entries!
First, let us acknowledge the unseemly, sordid side of this incident, the fodder for the masses. Front Office Sports reports: "Rumors that TMZ paid $120,000 for the grainy video were scoffed at by those who know how TMZ operates. While the exact price isn't immediately known, it's believed it could have been bought for less than $10,000." Such a deal!
https://frontofficesports.com/draymond-green-jordan-poole-fight-video/
As to actual Basketball, Poole has taken his game to another level and is a valuable Warriors asset. Fantasy Leaguers can logically expect Poole to be a key contributor this season. But, like football, a running back or quarterback is worthless without a tough Offensive Line.
Draymond is the that Offensive Line for Poole, who can explode on a moment's notice. Somebody sets the blocks, picks, shoves, rebounds and collective intensity which allows Poole to maximize his game and bag a quick six-pack of 3-pointers and wheel-and-deal on the run. That Somebody is the acknowledged "heart and soul" of the Warriors, Mr. Draymond Green. The Warriors Way is to use adversity to become stronger, and Steve Kerr is a Guru in that realm. This incident is over! In fact, it will make all the players bond even more closely as they deal with this blip on the screen and turn their focus to more important items on the W's Agenda: More Championships!

Jordan Poole has agreed to a four-year, $140 million extension Saturday, his agents told ESPN. The former first-round pick is coming off the best season of his career, having averaged 18.5 points and
4.0 assists per game in 2022.
In other news, Andrew Wiggins has reportedly agreed to a four-year, $109 million new contract with the Warriors'... just hours after Poole's $140 million deal. Some say Wiggs had to take a pay cut, so they could pay Poole.
Those numbers are so far out of my comprehension that I don't care who gets how much. I'm just glad Wiggs is stickin' around -- the unsung hero of the Warriors' most recent championship. A gentleman, a talented star who continues to expand his game and a Happy Warrior for the next four years.

49ers Fall to Falcons
To try to put a positive spin on this contest, look no further than the excitement which Brandon Aiyuk provided, along with his two
touchdowns, plus some spectacular returns by Ray-Ray McCloud III.
Regrettably, the Niners' lineup was so depleted by injuries that it caused problems on both sides of the ball. Sure, there were some issues with coverage and turnovers, but every player played with toughness and intensity. However, Atlanta's offense kept the 49ers off balance, and they deserve some credit for their game plan.
The return of Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, and Arik Armstead should right the Good Ship 49ers, and rookie Jordan Mason could add some Frank Gore-style power to the run game. It's time for a big Bounce-Back game at Levi's® Stadium, infused with
San Francisco's customary joie de vivre.

MLB team salaries.
The Guardians are 28th with the A's 30th and the eliminated Mariners are ranked 21st in the way of salaries. Unfortunately, the Guardians did not eliminate the Yankees in four. It's unlikely they will win at Yankee Stadium in 5. Still, Go Guardians! A $82,057,492 salary can stop a championship-buying $264,934,200 salary in

The Double Play, in San Francisco, is located just across the street from the old Seals Stadium
|
The Double Play -- Hoping for a Second Chance
by Dave Newhouse
| |
As another baseball season nears closure, it’s without a happy ending. The Double Play saloon has gone up in flames.
The Double Play, at the corner of 16th and Bryant in San Francisco, was directly across the street from Seals Stadium, which provided my introduction to professional baseball in 1948 as a nine-year-old in Menlo Park, already with a better chance one day of writing about baseball than playing the game.
Seals Stadium was the loveliest single-deck ballpark I’ve ever seen, built in 1931. The Double Play opened in 1909. Now they’re both a memory.
The Double Play burned to the ground a week before the current regular season ended, thus taking with it the last visual memories of Seals Stadium -- an artistic rendering of what the ballpark looked like circling the dining room, making patrons feel as if they were “inside” its confines.
But the actual Seals Stadium offered several enticements that set it apart from most minor league parks, for certain.
First, was its green-ness, a 30-foot dark green wall that stretched from the left field foul line all the way through center field, abutting the right field bleachers.
Second, there was a Hamm’s Brewery “beer glass” next door, situated high above the Stadium, which filled up and emptied electronically, all game long.
Third, there was Langendorf Bakery down the street, whose sweet aroma wafted over the ballpark.
Fourth, the fog, which made it look during night games that you were watching baseball in a dream.
The Double Play captured some of that, artistically, but its connection to Seals Stadium was short-lived after the Giants played there in 1958 after moving from New York, only to shift to the brand-new, but less-attractive, Candlestick Park in 1960. Beautiful Seals Stadium was razed shortly thereafter.
| |
After the fire on September 24 of this year
The Double Play then stood across the street from a shopping center, which was built where Seals Stadium was located. In many minds, a bad trade.
My local boyhood hero was outfielder Joe Brovia, a left-handed hitter with prodigious power for the Triple-A Seals of the Pacific Coast League. He blasted one over that tall center field fence, and a star with his name and the date of that blow was painted on the fence where his home run left the park. I’m told that even impressed Willie Mays.
When Brovia underwent an appendectomy as a Seal, my brother and I sent him a get well card. At Christmas, he sent us a handwritten thank you note. Much later as an adult, I befriended Brovia, truly getting to know my childhood PCL idol.
So much of my development was fostered by those baseball memories at picturesque Seals Stadium. I once interviewed Giants' clubhouse manager Mike Murphy at the Double Play, specifically choosing that site because his Seals memories coincided with mine, age-wise.
Wait, all is not lost? Current Double Play owner Rafael Hernandez, fired up by that devastating fire, vowed, “The plan is, we build again.”
If that happens, I plan to have a beer there to celebrate. Maybe one for Joe Brovia, too.

Vancouver, B.C. --
Fisherman's Paradise
| |
I have been lucky enough to reel in some rather large finny creatures in my travels. During the weekend of September 29th I had the always welcome opportunity of returning to the Fraser River in British Columbia, home of the great white sturgeon. I am in search of the elusive nine footer that is still swimming in the depths.
A day later I was sitting in a sold-out theater of 1,800 in downtown Vancouver who were gathered to view the World Premiere of the documentary The Grizzlie Truth at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
I lived in Vancouver in 1999-2000 while working for the Vancouver Grizzlies before the team relocated to Memphis. When the team moved a number of fans were extremely upset that there was no major effort to retain the franchise. One of those young Vancouver Grizzlie fans was Kat Jayme. Kat has become an outstanding film maker and after finishing her documentary entitled Finding Big Country about Grizzlie center Bryant “Big Country “ Reeves she embarked on The Grizzlie Truth. This 90 minute documentary chronicles the team leaving Canada and moving to Memphis.
The film garnered the Audience Choice award at the Festival.
Dave Doroghy, one of my colleagues at the Grizzlies, knew I was interested in fishing, and through him I became better acquainted with all of the incredible outdoor activities in British Columbia. He introduced me to Rick Hansen, the CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, who's a passionate advocate for people with disabilities in Canada and around the world.
| |
|
Rick is a celebrated Paralympic athlete best known as the Man in Motion for his epic two-year wheelchair trip around the world to prove the potential of people with disabilities. When Rick was 15, a car accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Rick is a force of nature on many fronts, and his passion for fishing conservation is legendary. That love led him to create the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society in 1997, when the species was in major distress. A mandatory catch-and-release program was created, and the fishery is now one of the most vibrant in North America. Rick invited me out on the Fraser River in search of white sturgeon on his customized boat on Nov. 7, 2000, and I was hooked.
I call this experience The Day the Fish got Bigger and Bigger.
|
The white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in North America and the third-largest species of sturgeon, behind the caviar-bearing beluga and kaluga. White sturgeon are found in four major areas on the west coast of North America, including the Sacramento River, which empties into San Pablo Bay, the Columbia River system in British Columbia and Washington, the Snake River in Oregon and the Fraser River system in British Columbia.
On Friday the 29th we headed out with our trusted guide Tony Nootebos of BC Sportfishing in search of seven foot monsters. We didn’t find any seven footers but any day on the Fraser is a gift.
| |
Dave, Brian and Andy with a 5-footer on the 29th
Andy with a feisty teenager
The guide estimated the sturgeon at eight feet and weighing 275 pounds
All fish are released back into the water after being tagged
Upside of sturgeon fishing:
* You aren't out in an ocean that can turn you green.
* British Columbia and other locations are spectacularly beautiful,
with wildlife everywhere.
* The tackle is relatively light.
* The bite of a five-pound fish can be the same as a 500-pound
monster.
* All fish are released at many locations.
* The species is 100 million years old.
* A big fish can be 100 years old.
* There are giants swimming down below. (See photo below.)
* Every fish is tagged and scanned for scientific research and long-
term protection of the species.

Drama in Warriors’ World
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
All the Warriors have done recently is win four NBA titles in the last seven years. The reigning champions open their 2022-23 season at home next Tuesday, October 18 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Draymond Green is slated to return this Thursday for practice and will be eligible to play Friday against the Denver Nuggets.
Green had been away since Wednesday, October 5 after violently punching teammate Jordan Pool in the face. When Green said he will take a few days off, coach Steve Kerr called it a “mutual decision.”
The star forward publicly apologized Saturday and said he is taking a few days away to allow the team to ‘heal’ from the incident. It seems we as a culture have become much more up-tight, and we are easily offended.
My brain reminded me that back in the day (1997) when the Warriors had Spanish radio, and I was doing their play-by-play during a practice session in Oakland, Latrell Sprewell snapped after coach P.J Carlesimo said something like, “C’mon Spre, put some mustard on that pass.” Sprewell attacked Carlisimo, choking the coach and threatened to kill him. It was during a practice! But we all have the potential to snap; after all we are all human.
In the 1997-98 season the Warriors were one of six NBA teams broadcasting all their games in Spanish; the others were Miami, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston, San Antonio and Chicago. Right after that incident I received a few requests (calls from media) not only in the Bay Area, but across the country. They wanted to know what happened between Sprewell and Carlisimo.
I’ve gotten several calls from people who were not sports reporters, but regular gossip stuff, like TMZ these days. I once read that we all have a “rage circuit” inside our brains and at any time the circuit can have a short and prompt us to act violently and sometimes in a very stupid way.
Draymond Green is an amazing player. He always seems to see the whole court as well as anybody. He has an impressive high basketball IQ. When he first came into the NBA, many said he was not athletic enough to be a small forward and too small (undersized) in the paint for a power forward. Many believed he didn’t fit into any position.
They were all wrong. Veteran guard Klay Thompson said last season about his teammate, “If you can’t be yelled at by Draymond, you can’t play on the Warriors. It's kind’ve like a bylaw now.”

Oakland Roots Drop Final Game of the Year 3-1
Oakland Roots got on the board early through a rocket strike from an in form Juan Azócar to give Oakland Roots the 1-0 lead in the 8th minute of the game. Pittsburgh found their way back into the game following the opening Roots goal and dominated the pressure and chances through the half hour mark. Following more sustained pressure Pittsburgh equalized right before the half through Toby Sims as the teams went into the half level at 1-1.
Pittsburgh came out on the front foot early. Scoring the go ahead goal in the 54th through Russell Cicerone to give the home side the 2-1 lead. Pittsburgh would go on to double their lead in the 75th minute when the Oakland back line seemed to give up on the play as Kenardo Forbes finished to make it 3-1.
Oakland ended the game with a 3-1 loss and had to wait for the Las Vegas Lights result ending at 9:30 PM PT to learn their playoff fate. If Vegas lose or tie Oakland could still qualify.

Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day Punctuates a New Direction for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Week
MONTEREY, Calif., October 6, 2022—In the 65-year history of the storied WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, it had never been done. But that all changed Sunday, Aug. 21 when 60 historic race cars and several carefully curated others broke tradition and raced reverse course and up to finish at the famed Corkscrew.
It was quite the sight to see entrants such as Chris Locke’s 1976 Lotus 77 Formula One and the 1971 Porsche 908/3 driven by Gunnar Jeannette race reverse course from near the traditional start/finish line. Guests enjoyed it as well as people crowded into pit lane and turn 11 to watch them begin their race up the four-turn course. And all along the course the fences were lined with cheering people.
Among the highlights were the Kevin Jeannette- prepared Doc Hudson Hornet, popularized by Pixar’s film Cars, and driven by Bruce Canepa; the 1,000-horsepower Corvette driven, or drifted, all the way to the top by Formula Drift Champion Matt Field; or the stunningly quick launch off the line by the 2022 Lucid Air GT Performance driven by professional Ben Collins.

Rob Bironas
The answer is Rob Bironas of the Tennessee Titans, who kicked eight field goals during a game against the Houston Texans in 2007. Bironas converted field goals of 52, 25, 21, 30, 28, 43, 39, and 29 yards. The Titans went on to beat the Houston Texans, 38-36. A recap of the game can be found at this link.
Unfortunately, Bironas passed away after he was involved in a car accident. Sports Illustrated has a write-up
about his tragic death in 2014.

For the past 60 years, Michael Zagaris has taken his camera behind the scenes of the NFL, capturing the moments that define America’s game. With unparalleled access—42 Super Bowls, 49 seasons as team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, and a behind-the-scenes passport to the rest of the NFL—Zagaris takes his aim beyond the field and to the locker room, the bench, the practices, and the training camps. His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider.
With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights Zagaris’s storied career as a photographer, showcasing the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
