News and Opportunities to Serve

October Mission Challenge

For the month of October, we will be collecting boxes of Hamburger Helper. There is a collection box outside the front doors as well as a table in the Gathering Area to drop off donations.

College care packages

It's that time of year again for us to send warm wishes from the church to our college students. But, we are doing it differently this year. We will be sending a card with a gift card instead of sending boxes with goodies in them. So instead of going shopping for goodies for the box, if you'd like to help contribute to this ministry a donation of $10-$20 will help cover the costs. The donation can be left in an envelope in the baskets at the back of the church or in the church office. Please notate that it's for the College Care packages. Additionally, if you have a college student please send the students name, name of school and school address to the church office by October 18th.

All Saints Day

On Sunday, November 7 we will celebrate All Saints Sunday. It is a time to remember and give thanks for our family who have passed away in this last year. We are asking that you share photographs so that we can use their pictures in our worship service as we call their name and ring a bell in their honor and memory. Please get your pictures in to Katie in our church office no later than Wednesday, November 3rd.

Welcome Baby Dyer

We are so excited for the Dyer Family welcoming their new baby girl into the world! With all the changes a new baby brings, we would like to help take some of the load off of worrying about preparing food right now. Instead of a meal train, the family has asked for DoorDash or GrubHub gift cards. Anyone who would like to donate can send them directly to Jen Dyer at [email protected] or drop them off at the church office and we will be sure to get them to the family.

Acme CashBack

The Acme CashBack program has begun again! Please save your receipts dated after August 5 and put them in the box near the Welcome Center. This program will run until December 25th.

Common Threads

Common Threads Closet is a non-denominational non-profit that distributes clothing, shoes, and small household items to those in need and in a setting that they can choose the items that they want and need. There is a box in the coat room to collect any items you wish to go to this organization.

Pastor Appreciation Month
Greetings Montrose Zion Family,

As many of you know, October is Pastor Appreciation Month, and we would like to recognize Pastor Bill as well as Jen, our Director of Youth and Young Adults, for the roles that they have played during these difficult times. We are blessed to have Pastor Bill's leadership during the pandemic over the past year and a half. He, Jen, and Joe have helped the church connect with each other and the community in different ways. As all of us have had to make adjustments, this has resulted in a lot of changes and challenges for them to make, and we would like everyone to reach out with your thanks and appreciation. They have had to do many different things over the past year, such as having both online and in-person worship, which has been a big undertaking that has been successful. Though none of us truly know all the parts of their job and everything that they do in ministry for us, we can however recognize their love, dedication, training, time, and talents that go into making Montrose Zion UMC the great church family that we are. We know that there is so much that goes into ministry than just showing up on Sunday morning and we are very thankful for them. This month we would like to shower them with reminders of how much they are appreciated.

In addition to the blessings that we have in Pastor Bill and Jen, we have also been blessed with an amazing worship leader and music director in Joe Leaman. Joe adds a very meaningful part in our worship and in the life of the church. He spends countless hours and shares an abundance of energy with our congregation. We hope you’ll also take this time of appreciation to share some of your gratitude for him.

Please take some time this month to show your appreciation for our pastoral staff. Maybe show your appreciation through notes or sharing meaningful impacts that they have made. Do not downplay what a difference a personal note can make to show appreciation. Whether that is a drawing from a child, a word of encouragement or the sharing of a memory of a way you have been impacted by Pastor Bill or Jen's ministry. If you enjoy making video messages feel free to record yourself (or family) and send via email or a message on Facebook. If gift giving is something you enjoy, then please do so. Again, these are just some ideas to express your appreciation.

As we enter the season of practicing more gratitude, let's be sure to make sure we are sharing our gratitude for Pastor Bill, Jen, and Joe.

Blessings!

This Sunday

This Sunday we'll be looking at the story of David and Bathsheba, especially the part of the story where Nathan confronts David after he has Bathsheba's husband killed. We will reflect on David's abuse of power, as well as the importance of trusting others to provide us with accountability. Here are some ways to continue these reflections at home:
  • Tell your student about a time when you received unwelcome advice that turned out to be helpful in some way
  • Ask your student how an abuse of power similar to David's might happen in today's world

Food Bank Trip

We will be volunteering at the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank Saturday November 13th. If your student needs volunteers hours this is a great opportunity. We will need to leave the church by 8:00 am and will return around 11:30 am. if you would like more information on this opportunity please contact Pastor Bill at [email protected]. If your student has never volunteered at the food bank before they will need to fill out their volunteer application on their website before the event. This date was not on the original calendar sent home so please pick up a new calendar which can be found in the youth room.

All about Letter “E” is the focus for the children this week. “E”xtra special snacks will include eggplant chips, edamame beans, egg rolls and our favorite Green Eggs and Ham! Our centers will include counting elephants, matching colored eyes and listening to different sounds in my filled eggs.

Last week when the children learned all about dogs and dog safety, we introduced our Mission Project for this month! Pay it Forward for Pets is a great dog grooming and boarding facility that takes its proceeds and gives back to dogs in need. The children and their families will be making and bagging up home-made dog treats that Pay it Forward will sell in their store. All proceeds raised from our treats will benefit the Critical Care Program that helps pay for medical treatments for dogs boarded in the shelters. We will also have some available for the congregation to purchase for a donation amount of your choice. Gently used beach towels and bath towels are also be collected. There is a bin in the main hallway if you would like to add to our collection.

Registration Update:
We still have a few available openings in our Monday-Friday Pre-K Class that we would like to fill. Please help us spread the word to neighbors, family and friends who might be interested.
