Faith-Filled Generosity: A Note from Pierre-Henry

As we begin our Stewardship Season in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences, I would like to encourage you to pray daily for a successful Stewardship Campaign. You may want to use the prayer composed by Susan Bray-Anderson. It will be available at the end of every service this weekend, is available on our website, and is included in this E-pistle.

A successful campaign, in my opinion, will provide us with more than we need to accomplish our mission. A campaign that will provide St Luke's with plenty of resources to fund our programs and ministries, to maintain our building and grounds, and to support and help those less fortunate than us. But also a campaign where all or most of our families and households will participate.

Pledging from our treasure is not about helping St Luke's paying its bills. First and foremost, pledging is a spiritual discipline allowing us to generously give back to God part of our time, talents, and treasure. We generously give back to God out of abundance, not out of scarcity; out of love for the One from whom all blessings flow. We don't have to pledge, this is not an obligation, this is not a burden. Rather we get to pledge because this is a privilege, this is our desire, this is our way to give back to the Lord.

We have 5 weeks to think about our pledge, to think about the many ways we have been blessed by the Lord, and also the many ways St Luke's has been a blessing to us.

During this season we will hear 3 fellow parishioners sharing with us their thoughts about stewardship, you will receive an email from me and, later, another email from the Senior Warden about pledging. The pledge card will be included with the second email and printed cards will be available at the office and in the church. Those without email will receive a hard copy by mail.

November 21 and 22, the Last Sunday after Pentecost, will be our in-gathering weekend when we will joyfully gather, present, and bless all of our pledge cards.

I hope you will be as excited as I am for this upcoming campaign!

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Give to God the things that are God’s
By The Rt. Rev. Diane M. Jardine Bruce
Once again in today’s gospel the Pharisees are trying to trip up Jesus. If Jesus supports the paying of the tax, his Jewish siblings who are rebelling against the Roman occupation will shun him. If Jesus says it’s unlawful to pay the tax, he’ll be in trouble with the Roman authorities. What does Jesus do? He asks them to look at the coin. It is a Roman coin. Pay the tax – meaning give the Emperor back his own coin! Then Jesus adds that wonderful line —
give to God the things that are God’s.
What exactly IS God’s? Well, we are! Our Christian faith in God points us always to live a life of gratitude and generosity. God showed us how we are to live and how to give to God the things that are God’s: God gave us God’s son, God’s first fruit, and we are asked to do the same, remembering that everything we have, everything we do, everything we are is a gift from God — and it is a gift that is meant to be shared. When we share from our first fruits, as God shared God’s first fruit with us, we are modeling the same generosity God has shown us.
Remember, we have two sets of three legged-stools in our Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement: scripture, reason and tradition, and time, talent and treasure. The first shapes our faith; the second is how we use the gifts we have been given to live out our faith.
The Rt. Rev. Diane M. Jardine Bruce is the Bishop Suffragan in the Diocese of Los Angeles. Her ministry focuses heavily on stewardship, financial sustainability and New Community development.
Serving Those Who Have Served Us So Well
The Outreach Commission asks for your help for over 350 U.S. Veterans now living in Yavapai County who are in need of undergarments (briefs, t-shirts, socks, thermal underwear, underpants, bras). There are about 90% male and 10% female vets who are in need. As some of you have seen, we have a yellow/black bin in the Gathering Hall near the front Church doors.  For the next three Sundays (as well as during the week), we encourage all who wish to donate undergarments to this worthy cause, do so especially during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of Covid-19, all undergarment items must be new and in store packaging. Unfortunately, this year, we cannot accept items that are not in this type of packaging.
Granite Creek Park Food Ministry is now serving each Saturday. A number of changes have been made which will help to keep both clients and servers safe. Masks for all are mandatory, as is social distancing. Hand sanitizer will be available. Clients will stay at least 6 feet from all servers, and servers will be 6 feet apart from each other. Food will be placed in a disposable “to go” box. Service begins at 11:00 am. For more information, contact Kathy Pessin, 928-771-2707.
Souls to the Polls!
Do you want to make sure your vote in the upcoming presidential election gets counted? A St. Luke’s parishioner, Jan Casacchia, wants to make sure that happens. She is volunteering to take people to the polls on election day, better yet, if you have a mail-in ballot and want to make sure it gets to the Election hdqtrs on time, she will pick you up, take you to the drop box at the County Bldg on Fair St. in Prescott and you could drop it in, then she’d take you back home. Also, for Arizona, early election voting in person takes place starting Wed., Oct 7 and goes through Friday, Oct 30. She would be happy to take people to that also. Jan doesn’t care what side of the political spectrum you are on, none of her business,
but everyone should have the right to vote.
If you would like to join Jan in giving rides or if you would like a ride
please give Jan a call at
With the re-opening of our Church several weeks ago, we have experienced a drop in the number of Ushers that serve at our Sunday morning services. If you, or if you know of someone, that is willing to serve at one of the 3 services on Sunday morning, we would love to have you join us. The duties are quite different from our normal duties. They are not difficult, and we would pair you with one of our experienced Ushers to learn. The services are at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 12 Noon. If you think you’d like to join this wonderful ministry, please call me at 928-642-2626.
Thank you,  Jan Casacchia

Update on St. Luke's Food Pantry!
It is now in a new location at the south end of the building at the end of the Classroom Wing.

If you are shopping for yourself and would like to pick up a few items from the list below, you can drop them off during our Thursday afternoon food drives from 2 -4 pm, in the same area of the church. This is the only day someone will be at the Food Pantry to receive your items. This week, the Food Pantry is need of canned chicken, cream soups, and saltine crackers.

Please continue to pray for the needs of our community; for those experiencing food insufficiency, for those seeking medical assistance, and for those needing housing.
Stay safe and take good care of yourselves and each other. St. Luke's Food Pantry

The Diocese of Arizona's Companion Relationship with the Diocese of Navajoland concluded some time ago. Companion Diocese relationships are generally for a specific time period. Arizona is presently in the process of establishing a new companion relationship with a different diocese. Our support, friendship, and prayers for the Diocese of Navajoland continue unabated, however.
