HSC Assists Mother and Child Find a Home

Marianne is a 29-year-old female who came to the Brian Garcia Welcome Center with her 1-year-old child looking for assistance. She came to Arizona from New York a few months ago to be with the child's father in hopes that he had changed and would treat her better. However, he became physically and verbally abusive. HSC Staff asked Marianne if she had any family who would be willing to provide them a home. HSC staff spoke with Marianne’s sister in New York, who was glad to have Marianne and her child come stay with her until she gets back on her feet.

Marianne has a strong desire to find employment and to engage in services in New York to help her heal from the trauma of domestic violence. On October 1st, HSC provided Marianne with a bus ticket and transportation to the bus station. Mother and child traveled back to New York and arrived safely at their sister’s home.

On October 5th, AZ Housing Coalition joined HSC and UMOM on the STN stage to discuss how decades-old land ordinances are preventing developers from building affordable housing in the Phoenix metro area. Nicole Newhouse, Executive Director of Arizona Housing Coalition, and Luis Cordova, Senior VP and COO at Rounds Consulting Group, examine the ways their organizations work to change local laws to create equitable housing for everyone in the state.
