From The Pastor's Desk...
A Promise And A Plea
Welcome to October - already! I hear two of Martin Luther's admonitions ringing in my ears: 1.) Make haste slowly, and 2.) I have so much to do today I must start by praying for two hours.
I hear these words in response to how we worship - first, the urgency that many feel to return to in-person worship, but the need to "make haste slowly" and make sure that not a single person will lose their life because of my actions as a pastor; and second, the mix of needs that go hand-in-hand with re-opening: planning baptisms, confirmation, and First Communion; meeting the flock and attending small-group in-person events plus starting more Zoom opportunities; accompanying committees in their ministries; and learning everything from road maps to where light switches are.
For those of you wishing more were happening, realize that above paragraph from the first word "I" to the last word "are" was all ONE sentence - most pieces of congregational life are intertwined and require many layers of care to make things happen. Hence my title here: "A Promise And A Plea" - I promise that we are working toward some form of in-person worship and that is an agenda item for Council on October 12. I promise that I hear the urgency and the yearning to be together. I promise that I am also arranging office hours when people can drop by to meet me and receive individual communion or share your lament about not having done more as a community since September 1.
I also have a Plea: our leaders/ministers/volunteers are working at capacity to keep current ministries happening while planning quite new in-person and online events. I beg you to treat them with love and respect, even when your urgency is ringing in your ears. Changing worship has affected our whole lives, and leaders are also missing the benefits of in-person worship and sharing of sacraments; they need your kindness so that they can help us build good strong new patterns.
We are making steady progress as a community and I believe our efforts will go better if we support one another, dream joyfully together, and start with prayer and listening to God at every step.
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn
A Devotion On The Number 40:
40
Israelites, 40 years in the wilderness
Noah, 40 days of rain
Moses, Elijah, and Jesus fasted for 40 days
40 weeks in an average pregnancy
All of these represent a time that goes well over what people could tolerate. They all encompass stress that is physical, mental, emotional, and communal.
In other words, THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.
Lament, exhaustion, hope and disappointment, confusion, worry - all are a part of 40. We are in week 30 of Covid restrictions and perhaps these words describe what many of us are feeling.
Yet we can also look to Psalm 40. "I waited patiently upon the Lord, who stooped to me and heard my cry. The Lord lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the miry clay... The Lord put a new song in my mouth... And so I said, "Here I am... I love to do your will, O my God" ... I have spoken of your faithfulness; You are the Lord... You are my help and my savior; do not delay, O my God."
Both of these expressions of "40" are part of our lives; may God give us comfort and hope.

Parking Lot Service:
Sundays At 9:00 AM
And
Pre-Recorded Service:
On YouTube Beginning
Sundays At 6:00 AM
Join us for our Sunday church services! Two options are now available. Our live Parking Lot Services are held Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM on the church campus. Our pre-recorded Sunday church service will be available for viewing starting at 6:00 AM on the Lord of Life YouTube website. The current Sunday service video and previous ones will remain on our YouTube site for viewing at any time.
Parking Lot Service Information:
All will receive an email prior to the weekend with a printable copy of the Worship Booklet, the Celebrate, and words of the hymns. Please print and bring them with you. For attendees without email or printers, you will be able to receive them from the parking lot attendants upon entering the parking lot. The same Worship Service Booklet will be used until the beginning of Advent for our regular worship services on Sundays. The service will be broadcast on FM radio station 88.7 which can be heard on your car radio anywhere in the parking lot (The station has a 1/4 mile range limit.).
Volunteers will direct traffic into the parking lot where smaller cars will be positioned closest to the church and larger vehicles will be in the back lot. Congregants will remain inside their cars during the service. Open air trucks and lawn chairs are not permitted in this stage of opening. Volunteers will ensure proper distancing and orderly compliance.
Viewing The Services On YouTube:
A direct link to this site will be posted, prior to the upcoming service, on the church's Facebook page. Links are provided below to that website and to view the video of the service.
Helpful Hint:
If you have Comcast cable TV, did you know you might be able to easily watch the church service on your TV set? Use the voice remote and say, "YouTube Lord Of Life Lutheran Church Tabernacle New Jersey." This will take you to the LOL YouTube website. From there, using the TV remote's "arrow" and "OK/Enter" buttons, click on the service image that you wish to view. Please note that not all Comcast cable boxes and remotes will allow you to do this.

It's Good To Be Back As
Parking Lot Worship Services Begin!
The skies were cloudy, a few raindrops fell, but the spirits were high! Thirty-four cars arrived at the Lord Of Life parking lot to join our first parking lot Sunday service this past weekend. It was an uplifting experience to be back on the church property for worship, and the smiles, laughs, and warmth shared by all were testament to that.
Car radios received crystal clear FM reception of Pastor leading the service on station 88.7. Pre-recorded music also came to the cars through the radio transmission in flawless fashion. The Passing Of The Peace was a hand wave through open car windows. Offerings were collected as cars left the parking lot. Pastor greeted congregants as they departed in their cars. Communion was not celebrated at this service, but it will be administered in the next one on Sunday, October 4th using individually wrapped "bread and grape juice communion kits." These will be handed out as cars enter the parking lot.
Thanks to all the volunteers who assisted with the service. We, again, ask that parking lot attendants sign up for next week's service. Please use the link provided at the end of the LifeLines article that follows to volunteer. We all appreciate your help!
Looking Forward To Seeing You
At Next Week's Service!
All Are Welcome!

For people without email or a printer, copies of them will be available at the service. Please ask an attendant when you arrive at the church for them. We are asking for 5 volunteers to help make the worship service successful. LOL Goes Pink!
Breast Cancer Awareness And Fund Raising Event
Lord of Life is excited to partner in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides by sponsoring a team again for the annual event. Unfortunately, instead of strutting down the boardwalk decked out in pink attire, this year, the annual event will be held virtually due to COVID-19. "Making Strides: Virtually Younited" will air live on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 PM on 6ABC's Facebook and YouTube Channels. Guest speakers, survivor stories, special musical artists, and more will be coming to a computer near you, and we can even wear pink PJs while watching!
Join Our LOLTeam Or Make A Donation
It would be wonderful for you to be a part of our team or make a monetary donation to The American Cancer Society. By clicking on the link below, you are directed to our team's page (Lord of Life LC). Once there, you can help by scrolling down and making an online donation (in any amount) or join the team. You may even choose to dedicate a Strides Tribute Bag for a $10 donation. This will light a candle in a loved one's honor or memory and LOL LC's team will get the credit. If you prefer, your donation by personal check can be mailed to the church office. All donations are greatly appreciated! Please help us raise funds to celebrate survivors, remember those we've lost, and to fund the future for a world without breast cancer.
What Making Strides Is All About
Making Strides is a movement and the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation. Money raised helps the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking breast cancer research and also provides patient services like free rides to chemotherapy, free lodging near treatment sites, and a live 24/7 cancer helpline (800-227-2345). Unfortunately about 279,100 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2020 - in both women and men. So please join the Lord of Life LC team in the movement; every contribution is important!

Update From Haiti
A Message From Penny Miller:
Haiti is not immune from the spread of Covid 19. Although many understand that they need to quarantine in their homes to be safe, many do not. They know to wear a mask and avoid crowds when outside, but that makes their daily life style difficult. Haitians need to work and shop for food daily. With little electricity available, most do not have refrigeration. Prices on food and fuel have skyrocketed. Rent for an apartment is up and many face living on the street.
Schools delayed their opening, including the Sewing Academy. Our students began their new year in August instead of usually March. They have all they need and are able to get to the school for class. Things are going well at the Academy. We have 11 students this year.
Families are finding it more difficult to feed their children. This has affected the census in Solace Hospital where they feed malnourished children. Solace Hospital is the location of the Hope Alive Clinic. They are in desperate need of Pack 'N Play portacribs and also the sheets for them. And there is always a need for diapers and baby formula. They continue to make meals of natural peanut butter, dry milk, ground vitamins and clean water. The children get this 5 times a day. Their health improves, although slowly, and they do get stronger.
If anyone would like to contribute any of the needed items please call me, and I will gladly pick them up.
Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti. Your support means so much to them.
Peace,
Penny Miller

Any Positives In The Pandemic?:

Janell Reich contacted the Editors and suggested that we ask readers to share with all some positive things that they did during the pandemic. Our daily routines changed several months ago as we all coped with the "new normal" due to COVID-19, but many of us have accomplished much on the good side during this time. Suggestions of the kinds of things you might have done are listed below. Maybe you did something else along these lines. If you have something to share, send the Editors an email. We'll put a selection of what is told to us into the LifeLines. We will not include your name unless you tell us that is OK. Looking forward to hearing back from you and sharing your story!
- learned a new skill or rekindled an old interest
- read a book that you would recommend to others
- experienced an unexpected kindness
- found a Bible verse that is encouraging
- visited a lovely park or observed something unusual outdoors
- grown closer to family or friends through a shared activity
- volunteered and supported others in a unique way
- cared for a special pets that has been a companion and support for you
- accomplished a home improvement project
This Anthem Has Been Sung By Our Choir. We Thought You Would Enjoy Hearing It Again!
"And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love."
1 Corinthians 13:13 NRSV
