COH Curriculum Committee Meets Wednesdays  

For the Fall 2016 semester, the COH Curriculum Committee will meet Wednesdays, 3-4:30 pm. Submissions need to be in the CIM system ready for committee review by 9 am Monday the week prior. Contact Harriet Paule,, with questions and to co-ordinate pre-review of submissions prior to starting CIM workflow processing.

Barbara Armstrong Receives Chancellor's Award for Excellence
Barbara Armstrong, Justice Center, was selected to receive a 2016 Chancellor's Award for Excellence. Winners are nominated by members of our UAA community, which makes this award especially meaningful. Barbara Armstrong, MA, is a Research Associate in the Justice Center, and editor of the Justice Center research publication, the Alaska Justice Forum, issued three times per year. Ms. Armstrong is the media liaison for the Justice Center, and manages online content strategy and social media. Congratulations Barbara!

Urban and Rural in Alaska Conference Takes Place Tomorrow!
The Urban & Rural in Alaska Conference will draw approximately 80 faculty, students, staff, and community members together tomorrow, October 21st, in the UAA Student Union. The agenda includes a keynote address, morning breakout sessions featuring community partnerships, and a "Rapid Fire Community Engagement" session over lunch. Twenty-five faculty will give a two-minute presentation of their community-engaged teaching, research, or creative activity. A special afternoon workshop, "Facilitating Public Deliberation," for 15 participants will be led by Stephanie Bauer, Philosophy and Donna Aguiniga, Social Work.

Health Science Professors Present at University of the Arctic Congress in Russia
Drs. Philippe Amstislavski, Jenny Miller, and Rhonda Johnson actively participated and presented at the first University of the Arctic Congress held in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Johnson Participates as Co-Faculty in Oversea PhD Schools, Gives Plenary
Dr. Rhonda Johnson, Health Sciences, participated as co-faculty for two University of the Arctic-sponsored PhD schools in September. The first took place in St. Petersburg, Russia on September 12 and the second in Nuuk Greenland between September 28-30. The Nuuk school focused on Ethics and Research in Small Populations in Changing Environment. For more information, visit:

Human Services Students and Faculty Recognized by the Anchorage Senior Center   
In its October Newsletter, the Anchorage Senior Center (ASAC) recognized the joint effort of Lynn Paterna, LPC (Faculty and ASAC board member), and Yvonne Chase, PhD, to assist the Senior Center in developing evaluation tools that will assist the Center in measuring the effectiveness of their programs as they prepare for their next National Accreditation review. Dr. Chase's students in HUMS 420 (Program Evaluation) are learning to use the knowledge they gain in a partnership with the community. The students will present their findings at the end of November to the ASAC Board of Directors

AJSAC Releases Fact Sheet: Sexual Violence Committed Against University of Alaska Students
The October 2016 issue of the AJSAC Fact Sheet "Sexual Violence Committed Against University of Alaska Students, by Gender" presents separate estimates of sexual violence, including sexual misconduct and sexual assault victimization (both on and off campus) against women and men enrolled at the University of Alaska (UA) in spring semester 2016. Women- and men-specific estimates are provided for the UA system as a whole only. For more information, visit:
Dr. Rosay Interviewed by Channel 2 News about Sexual Violence and Sexually Offensive Language
Dr. André Rosay, Justice Center Director, was interviewed recently by KTUU Channel 2 News about the high rates of sexual violence and sexually abusive language in Alaska. Dr. Rosay stated, "Words absolutely matter...We all have a role in making it clear that violence against women is not tolerated in our society." Dr. Blumenstein Presents on Intimate Partner Violence
Dr. Lindsey Blumenstein, Justice faculty, presented at the 2016 Alaska Maternal Child Health & Immunization Conference in Anchorage on September 27. She discussed "Intimate Partner Violence, Mental Health, and Food Insecurity." For more information, visit:
Dr. Rivera Interviewed by Channel 2 News on Adult Perceptions of the Use of Marijuana and Prescription Drugs by Youth
Dr. Marny Rivera, Justice Center faculty, was interviewed KTUU Channel 2 News about her research and article in the recent issue of the Alaska Justice Forum that looks at Anchorage adult perceptions and attitudes toward youths' abuse of marijuana and non-medical use of prescription drugs. Dr. Cory R. Prof. Fortson Presents on Palmer Court Study

Prof. Brandeis Interviewed by Channel 11 News about Lawsuit Over PFD Cut
Prof. Jason Brandeis, JD, Legal Studies faculty in the Justice Center, was recently interviewed by KTVA Channel 11 News about a lawsuit in response to the cut in the permanent fund dividend (PFD). The PFD checks were due out in early October. For more information, visit:
Justice Center and AJSAC Domestic Violence Research Highlighted in Seawolf Monthly
The October 2016 issue of  Seawolf Monthly highlights the domestic violence research, education, and prevention efforts on the UAA campus. The article "Shining light into the darkness of domestic violence" focuses on research being done by Dr. André Rosay, Justice Center Director, Dr. Lindsey Blumenstein, Justice Center faculty, Dr. Brad Myrstol, Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis (AJSAC) Director, and Khristy Parker, MPA, AJSAC Research Professional.
