Kesher Marin Newsletter--October 2016

The High Holidays are in full swing with Yom Kippur services, Sukkot and Simchat Torah festivities. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like guidance in finding a service, congregation, or celebration that is right for your family.

If there are opportunities you're looking for and not finding, please feel free to contact me.  I can connect you with existing options in the Jewish community and explore creating new ones.  As always, check out our Kesher Facebook group for the most up-to-date postings.

G'mar Chatimah Tovah (May your final sealing [in the book of life] be good)!

Deb o rah - K esher Marin Community Concierge

The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a time to reflect upon the past and our ability to make the coming year even sweeter than the last. We think about the ways we have "missed the mark" in not quite living up to our own moral standards and being our best selves. Judaism demonstrates the process of seeking and granting forgiveness, as well as the importance of personal change and growth.

One of the activities from the Kesher High Holiday gift bag included decorating a mirror and some guiding questions for parents to help their children reflect on the past year. Included here are the discussion prompts:
  • While your child is looking in a mirror, ask him/her to think about a recent event in which s/he felt __X___ (use different feeling words-happy, proud, sad, disappointed). Ask your child to think about the event and what s/he did, what went well, what didn't go well and how s/he might handle a similar event in the future. It may be easier for children to do this while looking at themselves in the mirror, rather talking directly to a parent.
  • When we look into a mirror, we can think about the parts of ourselves that are visible and also about the things that we cannot see. Have your child use the mirror to notice something about him/herself that can be seen in the mirror. Then ask your child to think about things about him/herself that are on the inside, that we can't see just by looking in the mirror. Reflect on the best qualities we see in ourselves, the ones that make us proud, and also about the things that we would like to work on in the coming year.  Talk together about what we can do differently next time or how we can make amends for things that have happened in the past.

The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the perfect time to ask those we have hurt for forgiveness and also to forgive ourselves.
