Dear CIM Supporters,

We are already into the fifth week of the fall term with over 160 students taking private lessons, group classes and ensembles.  I'd like to welcome two new instructors, Hannah Flowers on harp, and Ryan Behnke on whistle, flute and uilleann pipes.  It is wonderful to see the school growing and developing with new students and instructors.  The tradition is truly in good hands here in Minnesota!

I'd like to send a late thank-you out to two lovely musicians, Iain Dove-Lempke (whistle) Barry Foy (An Luan instructor) who helped teach my and Brian's students during the first 6 months of our second child, Isobel's life.  Cory, Danielle and Mary also rallied to help me take some time off to be with our growing family. Thank you!  It takes a village.  Speaking of, we have more gratitude to express...

Please come to our  volunteer party!  If you have donated your time to the Center for Irish Music this past year, we hope you will join us at the Dubliner Cafe this Sunday from 3-5pm.  There are no official plans for tunes, but we might need to test out the acoustics....bring your instruments just in case!  CIM relies on you, our generous and highly functioning volunteers, to make our events happen.  If you have never volunteered for CIM, please consider getting involved this year.  We'd love to welcome you to our team.

Please take a few moments to read through the rest of this newsletter with information about:
Thank you, and enjoy the beautiful autumnal weather!  We hope to see you at one of the many events happening this month.

-- Norah Rendell , CIM Executive Director

Recently returned from completing his masters in Irish Trad Music Performance at the University of Limerick, Ryan Behnke is teaching at the CIM on Tuesday evenings after 6pm and Thursday afternoons.
Hannah Flowers is a new harp instructor at the CIM, teaching nylon-strung harp on Thursday afternoons.

Congratulations and Deepest Thanks
to CIM Board Member Mike Lynch!

CIM board member Mike Lynch is this year's recipient of the Irish Fair's Curtin-Conway Award!  The honor is presented annually to someone who has made significant contributions to the Irish cultural community in the Twin Cities and/or Minnesota. The award includes a $1,000 donation by the Irish Fair to the Irish cultural charity of the recipient's choice and the name of the honoree is placed on a plaque that is on public display at The Celtic Junction. The award was presented on Saturday at the Irish Fair of MN.

Mike Lynch has been an important part of the Twin Cities' Irish Community for many years, serving on both the Irish Fair of Minnesota and the Center for Irish Music Board of Directors. Mike grew up in a family that loved music, where it was common to have the air filled with the sound of fiddle and song at family gatherings. As an adult, Mike gained an appreciation for traditional Irish music, learning to play the bodhrán and taking part in sessions at Kieran's pub. At the pub, he took part in many discussions with like-minded musicians on their dream of a school in the Twin Cities where this tradition could not only be passed down, but flourish.

When the opportunity arose to make this dream a reality, Mike jumped at the chance to be part of it, quickly joining the Center for Irish Music board. Mike took on the role of board president in 2008, serving in this role for over 7 years. Mike's leadership, vision, work ethic and no-nonsense attitude during a critical time in the organization's history was instrumental in creating the Center for Irish Music as we know it today. Mike has taken responsibility for organizing the beverage service for events at the Celtic Junction for many years - recruiting volunteers and managing the inventory - thus providing additional revenue for the Center for Irish Music and insuring that guests are made welcome.

Mike was also a long-serving member of the Irish Fair of Minnesota Board, including many years as the Fair's beverage manager. He is one of those people who shies away from the spotlight, preferring to be in the background getting things done. While you may not have known his name, it is very likely you have had him hand you a beer at Irish Fair or most any event at the Celtic Junction.

Our own Norah Rendell says, "I have always liked working with Mike for a few reasons: One, his support for the CIM and the Celtic Junction is unwavering. And two, he doesn't mince his words. He is always there if you need him and you only have to ask once. He has contributed an incredible amount to the Irish music community in the Twin Cities and I am thrilled that he is being recognized."

Deep thanks to Mike for choosing the Center for Irish Music as his charity of choice!  Mike's support means the world to us and will help us continue our mission of "handing down the tradition."
