What steps should I take now to make sure my lawn comes out thick and green next spring?

First, apply a pre-emergent ASAP to eliminate winter weeds from popping up. Winterizing your lawn is also important! Winterizing means you're applying a fertilizer that will be stored in the root system for next growing season. It ensures the right nutrients are available once they're needed. You can find a 2-1 system that contains both pre-emergent and fertilizer, or our Marcum's 18-6-12 fertilizer is another great option.

An improved hybrid with brilliant, long lasting orange-red fall color, a uniform branching habit and rapid growth rate. Thrives in warm climates but will tolerate wet soils with good drainage. An excellent lawn, park or street tree. 



October Maintenance Guidelines
  • Select your deciduous B & B (Ball and Burlap) trees for fall/winter planting.
  • Pre-emerge using Orzalyn (Surflan), ferti-lome For All Seasons II, or Hi-Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper. Apply by the second week of September. NOTE: Do NOT treat areas that will be seeded in the fall for fescue lawns.  
  • Apply ferti-lome's Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench.
  • Plant shrubs to help root establishment prior to winter.
  • Choose from our many varieties of flowering bulbs and store in a cool or refrigerated place for November and December planting.
  • Plant pansies, kale, and cabbage. Don't forget to use Blood Meal.
  • Dig and store tender bulbs and tubers in a cool dry place.
  • In mid-month, fertilize cool season lawns.
  • Seed fescue, or rye grass as needed in shady areas through mid-October.
  • Mow and edge neatly before frost.
  • Select and customize your Christmas and event lighting with our commercial grade LED lights. Great selections available at all store locations.
