Immanuel Lutheran Church HERALD Newsletter
Our purpose:  to gather, nurture, grow & serve
FROM PASTOR DAN
Dear Friends in Christ at Immanuel,

I won't be with you for worship on Sunday, October 21, because I'll be in New Jersey with my family, gathered to celebrate my father's 100th birthday (on October 19). My parents now live in the Grace Assisted Living section of Lutheran Crossings in Moorestown, NJ (just across the river from Philadelphia) where they moved just over five years ago. Those who have been around Immanuel for ten years or more will remember Fred and Alice as visitors to our Sunday services whenever they were in New England to visit our family. They came to feel so much at home at Immanuel that those extended weekend visits often also included an afternoon coffee visit to Carl and Edie Carlson's house. They just celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary on September 13. All four of their children, their spouses, and most of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be present for the party on October 20. We feel very blessed to be having this reason to celebrate and one another to celebrate with.

One thing that I'd like to share with you about my father is that throughout his life, he was every Pastor's dream of a faithful parishioner. Growing up at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Staten Island, NY, my Dad was Sunday School Superintendent, a choir member, a council member, active in the Men's Club, and Financial Secretary. He ran off the Sunday bulletin on the mimeo machine on Saturday's while at the church to set up for Sunday School. He fixed things when they broke. He painted rooms. He served on Call Committees when new pastors were being sought. He was a person that the pastors turned to when they needed someone they could count on and trust. I remember my Mom once (at least once) complaining when he was headed off to church yet again that he "should have been a Pastor" since he practically lived at the church anyway!

As I moved through my teen years, and found myself increasingly involved as a Sunday School teacher, lay reader in worship and Treasurer of a church youth group, I sensed that my life would also be deeply engaged in the work and ministry of some church. So I heeded my Mom's frustration at my Dad and went to seminary.

I share this to explain (after 21 years) why my standards for lay commitment and involvement in the life of the church might seem rather high. Thanks to my Dad, you have a tough standard and role model to match. It may also help explain my longevity here in that I have found this to be a place where many have matched that expectation and standard. This is a congregation where a Pastor knows there are people to count on in a pinch and who have his back each and every day.

The man who has been blessed to have my Dad as a devoted parishioner for the past 30 years, Pastor David Jones of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Tabernacle, NJ, is retiring the week after my Dad's 100th birthday. He'll be at the party. For many of those 30 years my Dad changed the light bulbs, replenished the toilet paper and took out the garbage. Together with his friend, Harry, they fixed what was broken and painted what was scuffed. Pastor Jones knows how blessed he was to have Fred Wilfrid in his parish. Now my Dad's waiting to find out what Pastor he can be helpful to next.

PASS SOME TIME WITH PASTOR JOSH
As Pastor Josh continues serving at Immanuel, he would love the chance to visit and get to know as many people as possible (including you!). If you'd like to spend some time chatting with Pastor Josh, you can sign up in the lobby of Lawson Hall. Just pick a time that works for you and Pastor Josh will be in touch. You can decide where to meet and what to do - maybe at your house, or a restaurant, or at the church, or at a local park for a walk. More dates will be added through the end of the year, so check back often and sign up!
SERVING IN OCTOBER (schedule of worship volunteers)
SENIOR DISCUSSION GROUP
"SPIRITUALITY FOR THE HOME STRETCH"
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2 AT 1:00 PM
The discussion group for Immanuel Seniors called "Spirituality for Home Stretch" meets on the first Tuesday of the month from 1-2:00 pm. The next gathering will be on Tuesday, October 2. This month, the group will discuss an article entitled "Old Age: An Octogenarian Faces the Challenges of Aging with Good Cheer and Helpful Advice" found in a publication called The Torch, recommended by Ed Clarke. The article's author is Nan Graf, a retired Professor of English at Nebraska Wesylan University. So come and join the group as together we will face our own aging with good cheer and deepening faith.
DIALOGUES: ON THE REFUGEE CRISIS
FIRST SESSION WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 7:00 PM
It's not news to anyone that we are living in a time of conflict, division and disagreement. In politics, religion, education, and even in family and neighborhood relationships, we can't seem to find our way out of the "us vs. them" pit of divisiveness, however you define "us" or "them." In such a world, the church is (or at least ought to be) uniquely equipped to bring healing, hope and wholeness to a hurting world and to model civil and respectful speaking and listening.

"Dialogues" was developed by the ELCA's Sparkhouse Publishing arm to help foster such conversations about topics that too often divide us. The first of the "Dialogues" topics is the Refugee Crisis. Dialogues uses a two-pronged approach to allow meaningful conversation: first, well researched information to give participants a common, truthful starting point for discussion, and second, a collection of simple skills for being good conversation partners.

The first session will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome and everyone is certainly welcome to invite and bring along a friend or neighbor who might benefit from being part of the conversation.

In this series, you will hear from refugees themselves, from organizations that work with them. We'll read essay from experts in refugee resettlement and public policy. And we'll talk with one another and listen to one another. And we'll leave able to take what we've learned with us as an alternative to simply joining one side of an endless and ultimately useless fight.
CONFIRMATION BEGINS ON OCTOBER 3RD!
Confirmation ministry begins again in October, with the first meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 3rd, 7:00 to 8:30pm. The group will meet every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, and all students in grades 8 and 9 are welcome and invited to join us as we grow, learn, and have some fun together. This year Confirmation will be coordinated by Pastor Josh with Dave Cranson helping lead the sessions.  Letters were recently sent out to all families with more information. If you have any questions, please call or email Pastor Josh. See you soon!
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL FIRST SUNDAY GUESTS:
LEADERS FROM "HOPE LIVES HERE"
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7
Our "First Sunday" guests at the Adult Sunday School class on Sunday, October 7, will be leaders of a new, local non-profit organization called "Hope Lives Here," created to help people who have suffered the loss of a loved on (especially of a child) to make connections with others who are also struggling with loss by providing support in the form of outreach, peer to peer (one-on-one) support, meditation groups and support groups. Every month, on the first Sunday of the month, our Adult Sunday School class invites someone doing important work in our wider community as a way to stay connected with what God is doing through our neighbors in the world around us.
PASTOR DAN'S WEEKLY THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
CONTINUES STUDY OF 1 KINGS ON THURSDAYS, 11:00 AM - NOON
If you are free for a late-morning hour on Thursdays, you are invited to join a small but dedicated group of people who gather to study and ponder the words of the Bible. The group meets from 11am until noon, using no text other than the Bible itself and works its way through a book of the Bible from start to finish. This fall, we have begun to delve into the history of God's dealings with the people of ancient Israel and the reigns of King Solomon and his successors through the books of First and Second Kings.
OUR YOUTH AT "BRUNCHURCH"
A special thank you to our youth who shared with us the song they learned at this summer's Youth Gathering in Houston, TX.  It looks like that trip did DID "change everything!"
KIDS EXPRESS AT CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH IN WORCESTER
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12 AT 6:00 PM
Evangeline Welch is going to take over coordination of Kids Express this year (with some help from her dad, Brian).  They are going to ask the confirmation/high school kids to help serve on this date since so many of them went to Houston and met Steve and Diamond from Concordia. They are going to go out to Friendly's afterwards.  An email notice will go out shortly, or you can see Evangeline or Brian to sign up.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL - BIBLE STUDY ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
SEPTEMBER 30 & OCTOBER 14, 21, 28 BY ELAINE MACNUTT
Join us on Sundays in Room 2 at 10:30a for a bible "study" on the Gospel of John.  Can you believe - we will do justice to this Gospel in 4 sessions (beginning September 30, and October 14, 21 & 28) in Room 2 during the coffee hour.  Our theme will be "When Jesus sets you free you are free indeed!"  It will be a spiritually "fun" class where we will grow in our relationship to the Father, Son & Holy Spirit.  Elaine MacNutt will lead the sessions and as you can expect, she's excited to explore the gospel with you.
CROP HUNGER WALK
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 AT 1:00 PM
CROP lopg
Ready, Set, GO! It's CROP Walk time again! Sunday, October 14, 2018 is our annual Walk for Hunger but this year is special. It's Holden's 40th Walk!! We hope to pass the $300,000 mark with this year's donations and YOU can help us accomplish that. You say, "How can I help?" Thanks for asking!!

We ALWAYS need Walkers and the walkers need Sponsors...many! It's that easy, just sponsor a walker. Join us by baking goodies to share after the walk...take pictures at Immanuel before & after or ride along and take photos during the walk...drive a van/car to help pick up walkers who need a lift along the way...help set up or clean up in the gym with Kathy Mills the morning of the walk or help in the kitchen (Immanuel needs 2) to warm the soup OR clean up after the meal. Enjoy the band "Hit the Bus" and enjoy fellowship of others who feel that beating Hunger is a worthy cause.

Most of all, we need YOUR prayers for the walkers, helpers & organizers of Holden's walk but CWS/CROP who distributes the needed goods, food and money to reach the people WE walk for and all those in need of our help. Everyone can help in this way, every day, right from your couch or chair or pew. See us in Lawson Hall each Sunday to sign up. Let's make this the BEST WALK EVER!!!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28
Reformation Sunday seems like a good Sunday to welcome new members into a Lutheran Church, so we will do so on this coming Reformation Sunday, October 28. As celebrate our heritage as Lutheran Christians gathered by God's grace to love and serve others, we will also celebrate the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit to call new people into our faith community. If you or someone you know is interested in membership at Immanuel, please invite them to speak to one of our pastors. And be sure to come on October 28 to welcome Immanuel's newest members.

"CHILDREN'S WORD" CONTINUES IN OCTOBER
Children's Word is offered at Immanuel as a new way to engage our young worshipers on Sunday mornings.  We dismiss participating children age 3 to grade 5 at the Gathering Hymn, to be led to the gym by our adult Children's Word leaders for a time of music and Bible story sharing geared to their age group.  They return to the sanctuary at the sharing of the Peace and join us for Holy Communion.  The goal of Children's Word is two-fold:  to help our children encounter the days' Bible stories on their own level and to help parents participate in the Word portion of our worship without the distraction of tending to their children's restless needs. Participation is optional. Parents who would rather have their children remain with them in the sanctuary are welcome to do so.  In October, "Children's Word" will be lead by Katherine Lindberg and Becca Galvin.
3-YEAR FUND FOR LEADERS CAMPAIGN UPDATE
$97,512 RAISED TOWARD $100,000 GOAL
($8,000 IN PLEDGES YET TO BE RECEIVED)
Immanuel's 3-year Fund For Leaders Campaign began on April 1, 2017 and is scheduled to conclude on April 30, 2020. The campaign began with a generous $50,000 gift from a donor who wished to remain anonymous and who challenged the congregation to match that gift over the next three years. Fifty-two households pledged a total of $42,645 toward that goal. Pledged and unpledged gifts to date total $47,512 with just under $8,000 in pledges yet to be received.

The $100,000 was to be divided into a $50,000 gift to the New England Synod Fund for Leaders, which makes grants to seminarians in our church's Candidacy process to lower the cost of a seminary education, and a $50,000 gift to directly reduce the student debt of our former Associate Pastor, Aaron Decker. The full $50,000 commitment has already been sent to the ELCA Fund for Leaders, and Pastor Decker has received $46,000 to date. When the $100,000 goal is exceeded, further gifts will be divided equally between Pastor Decker and the Fund for Leaders. Special envelopes for the Fund for Leaders Campaign can be found in the pews any Sunday.
RESERVED PARKING
You may recall that at our Time & Talent Auction earlier this year, bids were placed for a month of "Reserved Parking" here at ILC.  Three (3) members won those bids as follows:  October - Chris Senecal; November - Ellen Friend; December - Kathy Mills.  A reserved parking sign will be placed to the left of the tree as you enter the lower parking lot.  During your allotted time, feel free to claim your space!
NEW CHURCH PICTURE DIRECTORY AVAILABLE
In mid-September, a color-photo church directory was emailed (as a PDF file) to everyone on Immanuel's email list. The new directory is intended to be saved on your favorite electronic device and be available when you need it to contact (or simply identify the name of!) a fellow sibling in Christ from Immanuel. If you wish a paper copy, there are several (black and white) copies in the Volunteer Office at church. You may of course, also print your own paper copy if desired. With our directory now in electronic form, it can be updated as changes (or new pictures) are submitted. We will send out new versions as those changes come our way, at least quarterly. So if you didn't receive it by email, we may not have an active email address for you. If so, send us an email requesting that we send you the directory.
23 ATTEND ANNUAL CALUMET GETAWAY WEEKEND
A group of 23 people attended Immanuel's Getaway Weekend at Camp Calumet September 21-23. The theme for the weekend was "Letters to Churches / Letters to Our Church." Pastor Josh led the group in two Saturday morning sessions: one a study of the New Testament Pastoral Letters, and a second in which people were asked to write their own letter to Immanuel at age 100, sharing what they'd want to say to their future congregation. Those letters will be kept in a "time capsule" to be opened in 2028.

On Saturday evening, our group split into four teams for a fun time of creative skits and songs, each celebrating a piece of Immanuel's 90 year history. Thanks to a generous gift from a fan of the Calumet Getaway Weekend, we are able to offer everyone a 10% reduction in the room and meal costs of the weekend this year, as well as a 50% discount to anyone going for the first time. We thank Eileen Connolly for serving as Registrar for the event.
NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Immanuel is looking for people who are willing to help serve as nursery care attendants during worship, with the goal of creating a rotation that allows people to serve once every 8-10 weeks. As part of our Safe Church policy, two volunteers need to be present with our children at all times, and providing nursery care is an important part of being a welcoming church to families with young children. If you're interested in serving, please talk to Pastor Dan or Pastor Josh. All ages welcome!
FALL GROUNDS CLEAN-UP DAY AT IMMANUEL
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 8:00 AM - NOON
We have tentatively scheduled our Fall Church Clean-up for Saturday, November 3, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Indoor and outdoor tasks will be available. Please save the date. More details to come.
FIRST SUNDAY GUEST IN NOVEMBER:
PASTOR AARON DECKER - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4
Pastor Aaron Decker, who served as Associate Pastor for Immanuel from 2010-2017, and as Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in West Boylston from 2013 - 2017, will be coming back to Immanuel to preach in worship and to lead an Adult Sunday School class as our First Sunday Guest on Sunday, November 4. Pastor Aaron recently shared the news that starting in January of 2019, he will become a Visiting Professor of Old Testament at Malaysia Theological Seminary, a school of the Lutheran Church of Malaysia and of three other Protestant churches in that country. In his message sharing that news, Pastor Aaron said that his parish experience was a big part of the school's decision to hire him, and therefore, "your ministry with me, in my years in Massachusetts, will be teaching these new pastors and leaders. In a very real way, you have helped shape the church's future on the other side of the world - without knowing that you were doing it." Be sure to come on November 4 and welcome Pastor Aaron back to Immanuel before he begins his new adventure in ministry in Malaysia.

NOTES TO IMMANUEL
"Thank you for the Camp Calumet campership.  It was my first time going for 2 weeks, and it was so much fun!  My favorite thing was doing the weekly play both weeks. It was good to see all of my friends again, and I can't wait to go to Calumet again next summer."  -Samantha Bardon
DISMAS FARM (A MESSAGE FROM GAIL)
A big THANK YOU to the faithful team that volunteers regularly to cook for and dine with our friends at the Dismas Farm in Oakham. Mary Jane Rasku provided delicious baked sandwiches that, along with cold side salads, worked out well during that last heat wave in late August. Heidi Lahey's yogurt-potato salad, Barbara Campbell's coleslaw, Diana Provencher's broccoli-waldorf salad and Marilyn Hildick's 4 bean salad made a nice selection to round out the meal. Jane English must have baked for days to make the huge tray of cookies, brownies and lemon bars that tempted everyone to have more than one. We were happy to see Pastor Dan coming up the walk with a jug of iced lemonade-tea to join Barbara, Heidi and Gail for dinner, pleasant conver sation and a tour of the barn and gardens. Ask any of them what happens when you throw pieces of sweet pepper into a brood of chickens!   One week after Thanksgiving will be our next turn to prepare and share dinner at the farm, Thursday, November 29, 5:45-7:00p. Watch for the sign-up poster or contact Gail Raney for more information: 928-925-8219.
