Pastor Berg's Blog: Sharp Wind
A unique thing one notices first when the calendar is about to turn from September to October is the sharpness of the wind. It is invigorating. It is even welcome after a long hot summer. But a sharp wind is also a harbinger of days to come: colder, shorter days. For those in the northern hemisphere it is also a reminder to get prepared.

October Journey Classes
October 7, 14 & 21, 5pm
October Journey Classes are part of a series called “In the Beginning…” This three part series “combines history, physics, theology, cosmology, mythology, poetry and a little bit of heresy to help us approach thee basic questions: (1) where did we come from? (2) why are we here? and (3) where are we going?” Lloyd Condra will lead this intriguing and thought provoking class. We begin at 5 PM and conclude with a delicious dinner starting at around 6:30 PM.

A November Journey Class (Sunday, November 4) is on the books "Bothell - Images of America." Author Margaret Turcott will lead this class, sharing historic information and stories about Bothell. Copies of her book will also be available. We begin at 5 PM and conclude with a delicious dinner at 6:30 PM.

Newsletter,Weekly News &
Narthex Monitor Submissions
A reminder that all newsletter submissions are due by the 15th of the month prior to publication. All Weekly News submissions are due by 2 pm on Mondays. In case of a Monday holiday, the deadline is the Thursday prior to publication. All submissions must be on a word document, not in the body of an email or pdf. (It is too time consuming to convert non word documents to the correct format for Constant Contact). In order to post on the Narthex monitor, please submit a picture sized 1920 x 1080. We recommend using Canva to create your pictures, where you can insert the custom size of 1920 x 1080. If you need help getting started with Canva, please schedule an appointment with Kris in the church office. Thank you very much for your help!
October 2018
You may want a book to finish out your summer reading. Here is the list of five books selected by Linda for September’s book theme: Exploring Our Faith.
Look for the small tag in each book summarizing the theme of the book i.e. Days of Awe and Wonder—the tag says “ Christian theologian Marcus Borg reminds us to keep an open mind as we explore what it means to be Christian”
September: Exploring Our Faith
• Days of Awe and Wonder- Marcus Borg
• The Sin of Certainty
• What’s So Amazing about Grace?
• Lutheran Questions, Lutheran Answers
• The Gift of the Gospel

Social Ministry Update
October Outreach
All money received in the Change for Change jar will be used to support Hopelink Food Bank.
The focus of donations to the Hopelink grocery cart will be for be for baby supplies (formula, baby food, diapers, baby wipes, etc.)
October Monthly Outreach: $1,100.00 each, will go to Foss Home & Village .
Please help Compass Housing Alliance provide socks to the many needy and homeless men and women in our community. Homeless feet are sore from walking, often in wet and old socks. A new pair of socks can bring real joy and comfort.
Please place your donation of new socks in the Caring Corner in the marked receptacle through October 28th! Many feet will thank you!
Scrip and Other Passive Fundraising for First Lutheran Church!
We have several opportunities for earning money while you shop for FLC's many social ministry programs:
  1. Buy Scrip on Sunday mornings or sign up for Shop with Scrip. Many vendors are available for instant purchase and redemption from your mobile phone in the Shop with Scrip program. No more writing checks; the money is automatically deducted from your checking account using Presto Pay. (The profit margin for scrip is not great enough to support credit card payments.) Scrip returns anywhere from 3 - 12% of your purchases to FLC! You can buy grocery cards, movie tickets, Amazon, even Groupon - the list is great!
  2. Sign up for Amazon Smile and name First Lutheran Church as your charity. Every time you shop with Amazon Smile FLC receive .05% of your purchase price. You can still use Amazon Prime. Get your kids to sign up, too!
  3. Link your Fred Meyer rewards card to their Community Rewards program for First Lutheran Church. All of your purchases will result in a quarterly donation to FLC.
  4. Sign up for Bartell's B Caring Program, and name First Lutheran Church as your charity.
Thank you
A huge thank you to all that provided special music this summer! We had a wonderful variety of vocal & instrumental selections from people sharing their talents to enhance our worship experience.

My brother Kevin and Vicky,
greetings you from Morogoro. Here I forward the email from our Synod partner Tulsa Oklahoma concerning the funds your congregation sent to us for January and February floods. I would like you to give our thanks to the congregation of First Evangelical Lutheran Church Bothell Washington for the meaningful support to our people. We will use the donation for food and seeds for the victims of floods. We thank you again for all of your support to God's ministry here in Morogoro. Also we would like to thanks our partner Synod of Arkansas and Oklahoma for supporting us in many ways as it shows at this email.

Looking Ahead!
SAVE THE DATE - Lucy Kay Osborne, FLC Music Director
Advent (& Christmas) Festival is Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 pm. Appetizers & wine in the Fellowship Hall at 4 pm.  The choir and Ensemble will sing a couple of selections and we like to keep the festival at an hour (not including the refreshments).

If you need an accompanist for your selection, please ask him/her before Nov. 4th. The season gets very busy and I know one accompanist (who could that be??) that would like the music early, due to the number of people she accompanies.

I will be setting up practice rooms a week or two before this wonderful event along with times that people may warm up before the performance. Also, there will be more details to come about a theme for this event.

Please let me know as soon as you can if you'd like to perform (solo, duet, small ensemble, etc.)
