October 2018 - Issue #75
Dear Chamber Members & Friends,

With a 24 hour news cycle full of negative headlines coming out of Washington, it’s easy to be turned off to anything relating to politics. It’s very important, however, to remember that there are still good people running for public office at all tiers of government, from city or village councils, to state legislature, and even at the federal level. Some of these people are your neighbors, and they likely have the same concerns you have.

General elections, where a President is on the ballot, have seen turnouts of 50-60% of eligible voters nationally. Midterm elections, which often decide control of two of the three branches of the federal government as well as the future of state and municipal leadership, see turnout closer to 40%.

Your vote is your voice, and it is important that you be heard. If you don’t feel like you know the candidates or issues, take some time to educate yourself from neutral sources. For state and local candidates, you may be able to connect with them as they tour our communities, or reach out to them directly.

The deadline to register to vote is October 9 th , and the midterm election will be held on November 6 th . There is still plenty of time to make an informed choice. Vote!

Thank you for your support,

Brian Donnelly

Give us some background on yourself:
My family and I moved to the UP in 1995 for my husband's job as a school teacher. We then moved to the Keweenaw in 1999 where he is a teacher at Washington Middle School. We have two adult daughters.
I started working at Edward Jones in 2006 as an On-Call BOA (Branch Office Administrator). I was then promoted to a Sr. BOA before becoming a Financial Advisor in January 2013.

What are your business goals:
As a branch team, when people in the Keweenaw look for financial advice, we want them to know our office is the solution they are looking for in areas of planning for retirement and estate considerations. We want to challenge the status quo in service. We also want to empower people through education to define and meet their financial goals.

What is an interesting fact about your business that most people don't know:
I review insurance policies that people currently have and see if it still fits their needs. I check to see if there is any danger of the policy lapsing. We also sell insurance to clients to help them meet a need.

What keeps you here:
I love my job! I love the ability to help service my clients and help them reach their goals.

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw
Upper Peninsula Power Company was created in 1947 through a merger of three utilities. One of them, the Houghton County Electric Light Company, earlier acquired the interests of Peninsula Electric Light and Power, which began operating in the Keweenaw in 1884 – just five years after Edison invented the light bulb.
From the Edison bulb to high-tech electronics of today, you might say UPPCO has been providing “ U.P. Power ” for more than 130 years.
