Fulfilling Our Mission!
October 2018 Update from
Emmanuel Communities and Academies
The Latest from Emmanuel Park
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

The summer brought new life to Emmanuel Park in the form of fresh grass, planted trees and shrubs! As we mow the lawn, place signage and put the finishing touches on the playing field, the Park Planning Committee is beginning to organize an Opening Day Celebration for late fall.

Stay tuned for the details. In the meantime, come visit our very first Farmer’s Market beginning in November, with dates and times to be announced in our next Update!
Over the past year, Keep Collier Beautiful "KCB" donated over 100 trees to Emmanuel Community Park. Their donation has helped our park flourish and evolve. The National Wildlife Federation "NWF," a funding partner of KCB, learned of Emmanuel Communities' planting of the trees. NWF shared our story with national donors who were excited to hear about KCB's collaboration with Emmanuel Park. We are greatly appreciative of the partnership with Keep Collier Beautiful!

Join KCB for an upcoming Free tree event! KCB will giveaway free native tree saplings on Oct 20-21 at the Naples Yard and Garden Show 3331 Tamiami trail East Naples FL 34112. Trees donated by NWF Trees For Wildlife Program.
Teamwork and Collaboration with the ELCA!
Emmanuel Academies made great strides at a meeting hosted by ELCA Churchwide in Chicago in August, which included four of the seven seminaries, ELCA leadership, the “Dean of Deans” and others.

We want you to know that our students now have the blessing of ELCA leadership and a clear pathway to ordination through affiliation with Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary at Lenoir-Rhyne University! Recall that our seminary partner, Sioux Falls Seminary, is fully accredited by the ATS. The Seminary of Affiliation is a requirement per the ELCA’s Candidacy Manual, so we are excited to meet this requirement and ensure the Lutheran faith formation of our seminarians!

Our team has also met with the Florida Bahamas Synod and its Candidacy Committee leadership. The Synod has agreed to help us identify additional students as well as ELCA Pastoral Mentors and Theologians. We look forward to working with Bishop Suarez and the network of Latino leaders as we expand into Spanish language and culturally relevant education!

On September 2nd, Pastor Steve Wigdahl gave a brief update to the congregation about EA's success with
ELCA Churchwide and the Seminaries. Click on the video to hear more!

Emmanuel Academies' Ana Cabrera
started her freshman year of college in late August. Because of the generosity of our donors, she is the first in her family to attend a US university!   In five years, she will have graduated from our program with a BA & MDIV!
Emmanuel Academies Awards Two Microloans
through the 1K Church Initiative!
Tied to our Faith, Vocation and Economics initiative, Emmanuel hosted a 1-day multi generational retreat earlier this year.

The discussions concluded that the group move forward in granting microloans to support the growth of small businesses within our community.

Two selected recipients, Endless Brain and its founder Marcela Guimoye and Jesús Chacón’s Gordo Burgers, are thrilled with this opportunity and grateful to Emmanuel for their support! Click here to learn more about the retreat and the Criterion Institute 1K Initiative!
LECNA Fellows Program for Church Leaders Launching in February, in collaboration
with Emmanuel Academies!
Dr. Loren Anderson, Co-Director of LECNA Fellows, traveled to visit with Emmanuel Academies in August to share about the “LECNA Fellows Program for Church Leaders” and to explore collaboration opportunities (LECNA = Lutheran Education Conference of North America).

The LECNA Fellows, drawing from 17 years of success in furthering the capabilities and careers of college and university leaders, has evolved to now address the needs of furthering leadership skills of the ELCA’s pastors. This year-long leadership development experience will start in February, 2019, and the mid-year retreat held in April will be hosted by Emmanuel, here in Naples.

Though this is not directly an Emmanuel Academies program, we will utilize it as a development tool for Pastoral Mentors for our seminarians. Thus, we have asked the Florida Bahamas Synod for three nominations to join Emmanuel’s nominated participants. The total cohort will have approximately 15 pastors from across the nation.
The team from Emmanuel spent valuable time with Loren Anderson Co-Director, LECNA during his visit to Naples in August. Sharing knowledge and understanding of LECNA Fellows for Church Leaders and the work and ministries of Emmanuel resulted in an agreement to collaborate!
The Emmanuel Academies delegation to Sioux Falls Seminary and Churchwide also had a chance to visit with our partners at Concordia University while in Chicago.
Helping our Neighbors Learn
Conversational English
After the tremendous success of our Winter/spring Conversational English for Adults pilot, in cooperation with Literacy Volunteers of Collier County, Emmanuel Academies will be restarting and expanding the program this fall!

Increased English skills and confidence resulted in new employment opportunities and promotions for some students. Also, new friendships and bridges between cultures were formed which enhanced understandings that have shifted some of the world views of tutors.

Volunteers needed **No Spanish or other foreign language is needed** to qualify as a tutor, a brief training will give you the confidence, strategies, and materials needed to join this fun and rewarding endeavor. Scheduling and location are flexible based on your schedule.

If you would like more information or are praying about joining our team of tutors, please contact Nancy Dick at Nancjjdd@aol.com OR call/text Nancy at 239-450-0780.
