It was great to see so many of you at the September 11 Regular Meeting and to welcome two new members,
Jaye Devendra
and
Leialoha Leung
to our chapter. They have already been volunteering at the Thrift Shop and are a wonderful addition to our membership!
Members were able to hear what is being planned for us in the upcoming year. Now that we're beginning the new year, the Philanthropic Programs are running full speed ahead. These programs could all use any help from our member volunteers.
Our Thrift shop is our main source of income and without this, we could not fund our programs. As you can see, there are many opportunities for you to volunteer and participate.
The
National Assistance League Conference (Connect 2019)
was a great success, with five of our members in attendance. They have returned with new knowledge and ideas and will be sharing some of what they learned at the October Regular Meeting.
September was the month to make a
Kokua With Aloha Kala
(KWAK) donation to
Assistance League of Hawaii
at any Foodland or Sack 'n Save Market. Your donations made between September 1 - 30 will receive additional funds from Foodland and Western Union. Thanks to all who have already made their donations. We will have the final figures from this soon.
Our next Regular Membership Meeting will be at the
Hawaii Kai Golf Club
on October 9th. It is a "Speaker" meeting so we will have an abbreviated agenda. The guest speaker will be a former member of Assistance League of Hawaii,
Mary Beth Lohman
, who is now working at the Waikiki Health Center. One of the activities that our We Care Program supports is their Youth Outreach Program.

Before attending my first Assistance League convention, I was told by many about the excellent quality of speakers and wonderful camaraderie amongst the members. How true these comments were!
One talk at the conference was on the topic of "what is our brand?". Some 20 years ago the word "brand" became popular when assessing one's company. One's brand involves the blending of
what we produce
and what others
think we produce
. In this blending of reality and perceptions, emotions are formed.
Generally we use the same product, grocery store, airline, hotel chain, car, etc. because the product is consistent and reliable. We may form positive or negative emotions about some products based on the service we receive. Some products fit our value system or help us to feel good about ourselves. As we like a product, we return to it.
What is our Assistance League of Hawaii Thrift Shop brand? What do we strive to do? What do you hear consistently from customers? Before you read the next line, answer these questions for yourself.
It will not be a big surprise that returning customers like the quality of the items we sell and the friendliness of our member volunteers. Your smiles and greetings, willingness to chat, patiently answering questions, helpfulness and Aloha is our brand. It all comes back to you!

Once again, thank you for your help and support at Walmart and Target last month.
Everything went relatively smoothly. Assistance League of Hawaii does many wonderful things for the community. Through the
Operation School Bell® (OSB)
program conducted on September 28, all of us who volunteered can be proud of the efforts spent in clothing 140 students from Pu'uhale, Kuhio, Princess Ka'iulani Elementary and Dole Middle School. Special thanks to volunteer friends -

. We spent $8,519.37, which averages out to $58.41 for each elementary student and $75.50 for each middle school student.
One of the Counselors said that she was thrilled to see the happy faces of her students as they exited the store with their bags of new shoes and clothes. She was proud that many of them thanked the ladies in the "blue shirts", as they left.
Assistance League of Hawaii also thank our OSB volunteers who helped at the Target store event at Kapolei on September 14.
The next Walmart-Ke'eaumoku In-Store Student Shopping event is planned for
Saturday, October 19, 2019
. Most of you confirmed that you will be able to help out on that day. For those who could not commit, please let me know, as you check your calendars. Thank you very much.

OWL Presentations Continue at Various Schools
|
The Operation Wild Life (OWL) Committee went to eight schools in September. Five committee member volunteers went to two schools on Oahu, Lanakila and Kapunahala. Two women spent three days going to six schools on the Big Island of Hawaii. The visited schools included Honoka'a, Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Parker, Waimea Country, Waimea and Kohala Elementary.
We had the teachers at each visited school fill out a survey after each presentation and I am sure they will all be positive. The script is filled with exciting pictures and scenery accompanied with enhanced sound, expertly done by

. OWL is so fortunate to have her put together the Powerpoint presentation because she loves to do this!

Operation Wild Life teams continue to wow student scholars at the schools that invite our member volunteers to share their knowledge and awareness of our precious environment.
The hands on biofacts are always a hit with students.

September Was Another Good Month
September was another good month thanks to those of you who stepped up to work in the shop (upstairs and down) - we are experiencing very busy days and need to count on people to follow through with their sign up times. Please be sure to let Nancy know if you have to change your scheduled time
The total sales for September were $26,226.56. The last two open days of the month were very high - Thursday, Sept. 26 was $3,117.40 and Saturday, Sept. 28 totaled $2,500. With sales that high, you can imagine how busy we were. Our Halloween items are almost all gone and it is not even October as I write this. Thanksgiving and Christmas will soon be here and that means more work. You will receive information about the Xmas work day. Thanks to all of you who help out.
No new big deliveries are scheduled. Hopefully we can keep up with the full bins.

| Thank you for your diligence in submitting your service hours every month. It is very important for National Assistance League use and to demonstrate the good work that we do. Please send your hours to me at the end of every month so I can enter them onto the spreadsheet. Only the total is necessary.
