Cobb investigates Sterigenics plant's change in occupancy status!
MDJ Source
Cobb County is investigating a sudden change in building occupancy status by Sterigenics in regards to its controversial medical sterilization facility near Smyrna.
The company recently obtained a building permit from the county to install extra measures to capture and control emissions of the carcinogenic chemical ethylene oxide, which it uses in gas form to sterilize over a million medical devices every day.
Ethylene oxide is highly combustible and when combined with water it forms the main ingredient used in antifreeze.
In the Aug. 15 permit documents, Sterigenics lists its building occupancy type as "industrial-high hazard," despite previously listing it as "storage."
This change in status prompted the county's Development and Inspections Division to review whether this move is warranted, Cobb communications director Ross Cavitt told the MDJ on Thursday.
"It was only when Sterigenics applied for a permit in late July for their current project did they list a change in their occupancy status," he said. "During this review, the county has placed a hold on the company's permit request. This review is ongoing."
The permit allows Sterigenics to complete the emissions control work, which began on Aug. 26 and is expected to finish in early October.

Marietta school board to consider builder for Lemon Street project
MARIETTA - MDJ Source - Pending Marietta school board approval, the same company that is renovating the former school of Martin Luther King Jr. could also be awarded the construction contract for a central office project at historic sites in Marietta.
Parrish Construction Group is contracting with Atlanta Public Schools on the renovation of the shuttered David T. Howard building in Old Fourth Ward, which will reopen next year as Howard Middle School, according to Marietta district officials. King attended school at the Howard building.
The Marietta school board is scheduled to vote at its Sept. 17 meeting on whether to contract with Parrish Construction for a new central office replicating the former Lemon Street High School and renovation of the Lemon Street Grammar School.

Ensure our community gets needed resources by participating in 2020 Census
It is very important that ALL residents in our community take part in the 2020 Census. The U.S. Census ensures that each community gets the right number of representatives in government. It also helps with the equitable distribution of public funds, such as federal and state funding for educational programs, healthcare, law enforcement and highways. The Census provides an important view on how our country is changing. To get the most accurate information, we need to make sure everyone in our community is counted where they reside and properly identifies demographic information. For more information on the 2020 Census, visit
2020census.gov.
We want you to participate in the 2020 Census and know how to identify Census officials in your neighborhoods. Watch a two-minute video describing the process and how to identify officials:

There are also still plenty of job and volunteer opportunities available for the 2020 Census. For more information, visit
