This project really started over 20 years ago in a conversation with my rector.
"I'm not sure I believe in the virgin birth. It seems like maybe I shouldn't keep saying it," I said, repeating a sentiment many other Christians have shared throughout the last 2000 years.
"Why don't you keep wondering about it?" my rector encouraged. And so I did.
My project is not primarily designed to ask if the church should or shouldn't continue to hold the Nicene Creed as its sufficient statement of faith, or to question its inclusion in the liturgy. Rather, I am curious about how we can keep "wondering about it" together in meaningful ways. How might the contemporary church more intentionally "receive" the creed? (As the thirty-nine articles of religion suggest we "ought thoroughly" to do.) What impact does creative engagement with the creed have on how we experience its value and effectiveness in our spiritual life? Does engaging the creed more experientially lead to a more valuable connection to it?
