Weekend FUN at YOUR Fairfax County parks

Hidden Oaks Tree Sculpture Unveiling & More

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hidden Oaks Nature Center (HONC) located at 7701 Royce Street, Annandale, VA 22003.

Go to the   HONC website  to learn more about all the special celebration and programs being held from 11 AM to 3 PM.
Watch the Video featuring a snag that is transformed by a talented chainsaw artist, Andrew Mallon.  The tree was struck by lightening twice!  Instead of cutting it down, the Friends of Hidden Oaks Nature Center led a fundraising campaign through the Park Foundation to make this educational feature possible.
See the final tree sculpture and matching bench at the official unveiling at the 50th Anniversary celebration!

If you have questions about the 50th Anniversary or other great HONC programs, please call the nature center at 703-941-1065.

United Way, Combined Federal Campaign &
Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign

This is the season when employers join various campaigns to raise funds for nonprofit organizations through payroll deduction.  Employers have found that limiting fundraising campaigns to a specific time frame is an efficient way of supporting a wide range of worthy causes.

Last fiscal year, the Park Foundation received donations totaling $12,184 from the employer sponsored fundraising campaigns. This fall, consider designating the Fairfax County Park Foundation as the recipient of your donation through United Way, the Combined Federal or the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.  Make note of the Park Foundation's identifying number shown below to designate how funds are distributed.

Thousands have found that making either a one-time gift or a payroll deduction through their employer was an easy way to support nonprofit charities.  Your Payroll Deduction Gifts to the Park Foundation will be much appreciated and put to good use!

Monthly Giving
If you are not part of a formal employer campaign, the Park Foundation accepts recurring donations charged to your credit card every month, please call us at 703-324-8582. Your donation is still tax-deductible and 100% of your gift will go to the Park Foundation to enrich park land, facilities and programs.

Congratulations, 2019 Discovery Trail Map Winners!

(Left to Right) Yun Kang of Arlington; Tanner Polsgrove age 13 of Vienna; Michael Tortorella, Store Manager at Spokes, Etc.;
Liv Holm age 2 of Alexandria and Omar Ziddeh age 11 of Springfield
On September 25, 2019, the winners were selected in the 2019 Discovery Trail Map bike drawing.  The above photo was taken at the Spokes, etc. store located at 10937 Fairfax Boulevard in Fairfax, VA to capture the happy occasion.

Program participants  that visited 8 out the twelve selected parks were entered to win one of the four custom fitted bicycles and helmets donated by  Spokes, Etc.  and
Trek.   The 4 grand prize winners shown above were selected from more than 1,300 individuals who qualified for the bike drawing!

If you are shopping at Spokes, etc. take a moment and thank a store manager for their donation of the bicycles and helmets for the 2019 Discovery Trail Map program.  Their generous donation helped to make the program a success.

This year's transportation-themed Discovery Trail Map program led to more than 18,000 FCPA park visits.

You're welcome to participate in next year's Discovery Trail Map program, sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Foundation.
Park it for Parks!

The Park Foundation continues to receive car, truck, motorcycle, boat, motor-home or other vehicle donations as a way of supporting the 427 Fairfax County Parks.

Not only do vehicle donors get rid of an unwanted car without the hassle and expense of trying to sell it, a tax deduction as allowed by law and the pleasure of supporting our beautiful parks are mutually beneficial.

Donating is fast and easy and vehicle pick-up is free through our partner CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services). The vehicle does not need to be in operating condition.

"Our car served us well through many life events and when it came time to part ways, we were happy to find the Fairfax County Park Foundation donation service. Our family loves to explore the many parks Fairfax has to offer, so this our small way of saying thank you. The process couldn't have been easier."   -Jessica Lindberg

Luckily, her children do not seem too attached to the car.

Visit our CARS vehicle donation web page for frequently asked questions and information to begin the vehicle donation process.

Do Your Part! Sign Up for a Watershed Clean-Up Day

Grab a bag and go on a trash scavenger hunt as the Park Authority hosts "Watershed Clean-Up Days" again this fall.

Join with family, friends, neighbors or work colleagues and lend a hand by helping to remove tires, bottles, cans and other debris from local waterways. Helping to clear the earth's vital arteries is a great community volunteer project for service groups and students. All ages are welcome.
