Dear New Canaan High School Families,

It’s hard to believe that the first month of school is over. By now students have settled into their daily schedule and hopefully into a good routine. We had wonderful turnouts at the PFA meetings, school counseling presentations, and Open House. I am always impressed by how committed our parent community is to their children’s education. It is my goal to provide all students with an educationally challenging, yet fun, experience at NCHS. I am looking forward to an exciting year.

The following is a brief reminder of several new procedures that are in place at NCHS this year:

Schoology -
  • Semester I: Students will find their course syllabus, test and quiz dates for each class in Schoology. Schoology is meant to be a “one-stop-shop” for students where they can find all of the information, resources, and tools related to all of their courses. Some teachers used Schoology a bit last year, while others used Google Classroom or Moodle. This semester students can expect to see more teachers transitioning into using the program.
  • Semester II: All teachers will deliver at least one class using Schoology. Students may see a course or two delivered in Schoology, with the increased use of Schoology to deliver content, facilitate collaboration, and to gather assessment information.
  • 2020-2021: Schoology will be used by all teachers for instructional purposes.
  • We encourage parents to ask for their child’s log-in information so that they can accurately see what’s on Schoology.

Cell phones -
  • Should be kept in phone cradles during class times.
  • Students can use phones in hallways, cafeteria, library.

Homework -
  • Should be posted no later than 3:00pm if due the next day (change from 2:30pm)
  • Assignments should be handed in by 11:00pm electronically - Only if this is an electronic assignment.
  • Teachers will include how long work SHOULD take.
  • Expect 20-25 min. a night (average)
  • Please have conversations with your teacher if it exceeds this time frame.

October is going to be a busy month at NCHS. Our annual Club Fair is scheduled for Friday, October 4th. This showcases the many clubs, activities and volunteer opportunities for our students. Sign up for those in which you have an interest. The organizations will offer information about how students can make a difference not only to NCHS but in the town as well.

We have an activity-filled Spirit Week scheduled from October 14-18th, ending with a pep-rally and bonfire on Friday and the homecoming game and dance on Saturday, October 19th. Thank you to our parent volunteers for, once again, taking on the fun-filled homecoming preparations. I’m sure it will be a huge success!

As always, I look forward to seeing you at the many PFA or extracurricular events that will take place throughout the year.

Wishing you all the best,

Bill Egan

NCHS Athletic Department
A Letter from our Athletic Director
First, I would like to send my deepest condolences to the Griffiths family. Kaleigh was a member of the high school community and a strong athlete, participating in youth soccer and lacrosse. The thoughts and prayers of the NCHS family are with the Griffiths family.

The Fall sports season is underway and we have over 700 students participating this season. Congratulations to Field Hockey which started out incredibly strong with a record of 5-0 as of September 20th. Girls soccer is 3-0 with four games to come in the next few weeks. Girls Cross Country had a strong showing vs. Ridgefield, losing by only 1 to a top-ranked team. The girls won the Winding Trails Invitational on Saturday in convincing fashion. Many of the top cross country teams in CT competed. Football had a formidable win vs. New London, winning 32-6.

We have exciting department news! We have recently invested in new HUDL equipment and their online platform. Our coaches will be trained during October to learn how to utilize their Assist program for game stats, to store and access videos, and to use clips for recruiting purposes. Once implemented, parents and students will also have access to these videos. This is an incredibly important tool for our coaches, parents and students. More information on HUDL will be released soon.

Please come out and support our teams! Go Rams!

Jennifer Murphy for ordering and coordinating the delicious spread for the Open House evening. It was enjoyed by so many.

Shazeen Mirza and Susan Cushman for coordinating the New to New Canaan orientation, pizza lunch and parent coffee. These events go a long way to make new families feel welcome to the NCHS community and help new students get oriented, meet a few kids, and tour the school before classes start.

Thank you to our wonderful "alum" moms who pitched in and helped with Open House evening so current parents could meet their kids' teachers. Appreciation goes to Renee Fill, Kristen O'Connor, Lesley Crowley and Monica Granito.

Thank you to Michaela Nelson for offering her expertise and knowledge with our directory sales and supporting those efforts at Open House and PFA meetings.
