That is why United Way of Southeast Missouri supports two programs at Safe House for Women. One helps with

Touching an Elephant
By now most of us have heard the story based on a poem by John Godfrey Saxe of several blind men touching an elephant for the first time, each touching a different part. The man touching the tusk believes it is a spear; the man touching the leg calls it a tree, while the man holding the tail identifies it as a rope, etc. As I begin my fifth year with United Way of Southeast Missouri, I realize our organization is the elephant in the room...

Train Puppies while Teaching Youth
Each EPIC Pals volunteer is matched with a young person and the foster dog they work with for about 90 minutes twice a week for seven weeks. Volunteers help EPIC with logistical needs, contribute to group discussions, serve as positive adult role models for young community members, and help the young people they are paired with to stay on task with the daily training lesson. In addition to EPIC Pals volunteers, we need foster homes for EPIC Pals pups. Fosters agree to provide a temporary home for a dog in need while he or she completes the EPIC Pals program.
